The Earth–Moon System

2020
Before we begin to observe the physical wanderings of the “Queen of Night,” I want to introduce you to the mechanics of the Earth–Moon system. I will cover the relationships between the Earth, Moon, and Sun, the effects that gravity has on the motions of these bodies, and how we use their motions to mark time.

Dynamics of the Earth-Moon system

Advances in Space Research, 1993
Abstract Lunar laser ranging (LLR) has been used to determine the precise orientation of the Earth since the early-1970's. Two observatories currently range with 2.5 centimeter accuracy to a constellation of four retroreflector targets. The quality and the 23 year span of the lunar data permit the determination of the constant of precession to an ...

Formation of the Earth-Moon system

Proceedings of the International Astronomical Union, 2018
AbstractTrans-Neptunian satellite systems and embryos of the Earth-Moon system could be formed as a result of contraction of rarefied condensations. The angular momenta of rarefied condensations needed for such formation could be acquired at collisions of condensations.

Precession of the Earth–Moon system

European Journal of Physics, 2009
The precession rate of the Earth–Moon system by the gravitational influence of the Sun is derived. Attention is focussed on a physically transparent but complete presentation accessible to first- or second-year physics students. Both a shortcut and a full analysis are given, which allows the inclusion of this material as an example of the physics of ...

The evolution of the Earth-Moon system

The Moon and the Planets, 1982
The tidally-induced couple acting on the Moon, due to friction between the oceans and their beds, is calculated as a function of the Earth-Moon separation. The function is found to be proportional to 1+d/R3, and not the previously used 1/R6. By use of this new function it is found that the present rate of lunar recession gives an acceptable history for

Rehomogenizing the Earth-Moon system

Science, 2016
Lunar Formation![Figure][1] Apollo 17 sample of lunar highland rock PHOTO: PAUL WARREN/UCLA A giant impact formed the Moon, and lunar rocks provide insight into that process. Young et al. found that rocks on Earth and the Moon have identical oxygen isotopes. This suggests that well-mixed material from the giant impact must have formed both the Moon

The Sun Earth Moon System

2010
This chapter focuses on the issues pertaining to informal science learning through public outreach and the utilization of established and evolving web technologies. The Sun Earth Moon System (SEMs) is a website that integrates webcasting with Web 2.0 features to increase public awareness and interest in natural sciences as well as to dispel the ...
