Knowledge Extraction via Machine Learning Guides a Topology‐Based Permeability Prediction Model

open access: yesWater Resources Research, Volume 60, Issue 7, July 2024.
Abstract The complexity and heterogeneity of pore structure present significant challenges in accurate permeability estimation. Commonly used empirical formulas neglect its microscopic and topological characteristics, thus lacking accuracy and adaptability. While machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) models demonstrate promising performance, but

Research on the Overtopping-Induced Breaching Mechanism of Tailings Dam and Its Numerical Simulation

open access: yesAdvances in Civil Engineering, 2019
The centrifugal model test system is utilized to reappear the breaching process of a tailings dam. The results show that there are significant differences in breaching processes between tailings dams and earth-rockfill dams.

Exploring friendship in hydropolitics: The case of the friendship dam on the Asi/Orontes river

open access: yesEnvironmental Policy and Governance, Volume 34, Issue 1, Page 93-107, February 2024.
Abstract “Friendship dams” are an explicit, yet underexplored, materialization of hydropolitics that illustrate the potential role of water in international cooperation. Via a case study analysis of the Syria‐Turkey Friendship Dam project proposed for the Asi/Orontes river, we trace the process of cooperation that led to the use of this notion of ...

Clogging and Unclogging of Fine Particles in Porous Media: Micromechanical Insights From an Analog Pore System

open access: yesWater Resources Research, Volume 60, Issue 1, January 2024.
Abstract Pore clogging and unclogging in porous media are ubiquitous in subsurface hydrologic processes, which have been studied extensively at various scales ranging from a single pore to porous‐medium samples. However, it remains unclear how fluid flow, particle rearrangement, and the arching effect typical of cone‐shaped pore geometry interact and ...

System Reliability Analysis of Slope Stability of Earth Rock Dams Based on Finite Element Strength Reduction Method

open access: yesApplied Sciences
To overcome the limitations of rigid body limit equilibrium methods in earth rock dam slope stability analysis, this study develops a system reliability framework using the finite element strength reduction method (FEM-SRM).

Prediction of Pore Water Pressures in Several Embankment Dams by Normal and Back Analyses [PDF]

open access: yes, 1996
This paper describes the prediction of seepage in the impervious zones of six embankment dams by seepage analysis. In addition, by making use of the available monitored pore water pressure data of the first filling of reservoir, back analysis was carried

Evaluation of hardening soil model on numerical simulation of behaviors of high rockfill dams [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
With the continual increase in the height of concrete face rockfill dams constructed during this decade, the hyperbolicelastic model conventionally used in the numerical analyses of lower-height rockfill dams in the past practice becomes insufficientto ...

Distribution and variation of earth pressure on submerged toe wall

open access: yesYantu gongcheng xuebao
Submerged toe walls are frequently used in high concrete face rockfill dams. At present, the distribution and variation of earth pressure on the back of a submerged toe wall during construction and impounding periods are not clear.

Non-ergodic site response model based on local recordings for Menta Dam site [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
The paper describes the development of a non-ergodic site response model for a strategic site in the Aspromonte mountains, in Southern Italy. Fractured metamorphic rocks belonging to Calabrian complex outcrop in this area, located in a region where ...

Mathematical modelling of slopes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
The paper discusses first the effect of rainfall on the stability of slopes and it focusses on the role of permeability. Existing or induced discontinuities are shown to have a remarkable effect on the slope safety.
