Characterization of Earth Used in Earth Construction Materials

2021
The objective of this chapter is to present the physical, geotechnical, chemical and mineralogical characterization techniques used to characterize the raw material (earth and mineral addition, such as sand and gravel) contained in the earth materials manufactured with different techniques: earth bricks, rammed earth or cob.

Rammed Earth House Construction

Journal of Geotechnical Engineering, 1985
An elementary analysis for calculation of stresses in a rammed earth house is presented. The analysis permits calculation of safe wall height, and an examination of safety of these structures. It is observed that the usual wall thickness is quite safe; the thickness can be reduced by at least a third without endangering safety and this can lead to a ...

Earth Construction and Sustainability

Key Engineering Materials, 2014
This paper presents some considerations on the impacts of industrialized construction materials to Planet Earth. It comments about sustainability and show that large part of the present generation has not met their basic needs, starting with the house.

On Earth Stabilization with Natural Polymers for Earth Masonry Construction

Materials and Structures, 2006
In this paper we study the problem of preparing adobe bricks for earth construction as little erodable as possible. We have therefore tested earthen specimens stabilised with both vegetal fibres and a compound of natural polymers, and we have compared their behaviour to that one of specimens stabilised only with fibres.

Constructing the Digital Earth System

2008 Congress on Image and Signal Processing, 2008
Digital Earth (DE) is a virtual presentation of the planet based on geographic coordinate, and is an information system with tremendous amount of multiple resolutions and multiple scales data as shown in multiple dimensions. It can visualize the real earth and represent historical phenomena in digital way by using the large amount of data of the earth,

Reinforced earth — Practical construction techniques

International Journal of Rock Mechanics and Mining Sciences & Geomechanics Abstracts, 1979
The author illustrates the three methods of constructing reinforced earth structures: the concertina, telescope and sliding (York) methods. Examples are given of their use and their relative merits are discussed. In Britain a derivation of the concertina method is only used for temporary site works, although it is proposed to construct walls in ...

Construction of Earth Models

1974
An outline is given of methods used to construct model distributions of the density, pressure, incompressibility, rigidity, gravitational intensity and P and S seismic velocities in the Earth’s interior. Spherical symmetry is assumed. Reference is made to the problem of formulating a standard Earth model.

Rammed Earth: Construction Lessons from Experience

Practice Periodical on Structural Design and Construction, 2013
AbstractIf modern engineers devote careful attention to the environment of a project and study historical building techniques they can create more sustainable structures. Rammed-earth construction creates a thermal mass structure that cools the interior space during hot, dry summers and absorbs heat during cold winters. It is a historic building method

Development of Earth-Based Mortars for Usage in Earth Construction

2019
Earth as a construction material has been used for thousands of years by civilizations all over the world. Earth construction offers a low energy alternative to conventional building materials in addition to being cost effective and safe, qualities which are particularly important with the ever-growing need for increased awareness to reduce energy ...
