Ultrahigh-Pressure Magnesium Hydrosilicates as Reservoirs of Water in Early Earth [PDF]

open access: yesPhys. Rev. Lett. 128, 035703 (2022), 2022
The origin of water on the Earth is a long-standing mystery, requiring a comprehensive search for hydrous compounds, stable at conditions of the deep Earth and made of Earth-abundant elements. Previous studies usually focused on the current range of pressure-temperature conditions in the Earth's mantle and ignored a possible difference in the past ...

“TNOs are Cool”: a survey of the trans-Neptunian region - VII. Size and surface characteristics of (90377) Sedna and 2010 EK139 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
We present estimates of the basic physical properties (size and albedo) of (90377) Sedna, a prominent member of the detached trans-Neptunian object population and the recently discovered scattered disk object 2010 EK139, based on the recent observations ...

Seismometers Within Cities: A Tool to Connect Earth Sciences and Society

open access: yesFrontiers in Earth Science, 2020
The high degree of human activities in urban environments produces large background vibrations that makes it difficult to use data acquired in these areas for classical seismology.

Protocol for estimating exposure to compound heat wave and ozone pollution under future climate change

open access: yesSTAR Protocols, 2023
Summary: Here we describe the procedure for estimating exposure to the compound heatwave and ozone pollution under future climate scenarios. We first apply the daily-level temperature and ozone concentration across the world and perform bias correction ...

The Formation and Dynamics of Super-Earth Planets [PDF]

open access: yesAnnual Review of Earth and Planetary Sciences, Volume 41, pages 469-495 (2013), 2013
Super-Earths, objects slightly larger than Earth and slightly smaller than Uranus, have found a special place in exoplanetary science. As a new class of planetary bodies, these objects have challenged models of planet formation at both ends of the spectrum and have triggered a great deal of research on the composition and interior dynamics of rocky ...

Controlling factors on clay mineral assemblages : insights from facies analysis of Pliocene to Pleistocene coastal margin deposits, Western Portugal [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
The clay fractions in the Pliocene to Pleistocene coastal margin record are usually dominated by kaolinite and illite, with lesser amounts of vermiculite, 10-14 mixed layer clays and smectite.

The Search for Extrasolar Earth-like planets [PDF]

open access: yesEarth Planet.Sci.Lett. 208 (2003) 113-124, 2003
The search for extrasolar Earth-like planets is underway. Over 100 extrasolar giant planets are known to orbit nearby sun-like stars, including several in multiple-planet systems. These planetary systems are stepping stones for the search for Earth-like planets; the technology development, observational strategies, and science results can all be ...

Method to measure Earth missed by ancient Greeks? [PDF]

open access: yesPhysics Education, Volume 47, Number 6, November 2012, 2020
I describe a simple method to calculate Earth dimensions using only local measurements and observations. I used modern technology (a digital photo camera and Google Earth) but the exact same method can be used without any aid, with naked eye observations and distances measured by walking, and so it was perfectly accessible to Ancient Greek science.
