Modern California Earthquake Catalogs and Their Comparison

Seismological Research Letters, 2002
Earthquake catalogs are primary data sources for inferring earthquake behavior, testing earthquake pattern hypotheses, and estimating seismic hazards. As in any quantitative science, understanding uncertainties is crucial to proper interpretation. Examining catalog properties will also help guide future improvements in seismic observation and catalog ...

Catalog of Nevada earthquakes, 1852-1960

Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America, 1965
AbstractNevada earthquakes for the period from about 1852 to 1961 are tabulated on I.B.M. punch cards. During this period 1,173 events with Nevada epicenters were felt, 586 others with Richter magnitudes above 4.0 were recorded and were probably felt by some residents, and approximately 220 were reported in nonspecific terms (e.g.

Estimating the magnitude of completeness for earthquake catalogs

2012
Assessing the magnitude of completeness Mc of instrumental earthquake catalogs is an essential and compulsory step for any seismicity analysis. Mc is defined as the lowest magnitude at which all the earthquakes in a space-time volume are detected. A correct estimate of Mc is crucial since a value too high leads to under-sampling, by discarding usable ...

Short-Term Properties of Earthquake Catalogs and Models of Earthquake Source

Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America, 2004
I review the short-term properties of earthquake catalogs, in particular the time and size distributions and the completeness of the early part of aftershock sequences for strong, shallow earthquakes. I determine the parameters of the Omori and Gutenberg-Richter laws for aftershocks close in time to a mainshock.

A High-Precision Earthquake Catalog for Nevada

Seismological Research Letters
Abstract The state of Nevada is home to one of the most seismically active regions in the world, with crustal deformation associated with the Walker Lane transitioning into Basin and Range tectonics as one traverses from west to east across the state.
