Structural Heterogeneity Shapes Segmentation of Megathrust Earthquakes and Volcanism in Central America

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 18, 28 September 2026.
Abstract The mechanisms underlying the patchy distribution of forearc megathrust earthquakes and arc volcanoes in subduction zones remain poorly understood. Here we present a high‐resolution seismic tomographic model of the Central American subduction zone, derived from a joint inversion of local body‐wave and teleseismic Rayleigh‐wave data.

Evaluating the Economic Response to Japan's Earthquake [PDF]

open access: yes
This paper compares the 1995 Kobe earthquake with the more recent one in Tohoku. The impact of the recent earthquake on industrial production was much larger and long-lasting than that of the 1995 earthquake.

Testing the Predictive Power of b Value for Italian Seismicity

open access: yesSeismica
A very efficient method for estimating the completeness magnitude mc and the scaling parameter b of earthquake magnitude distribution has been thoroughly tested using synthetic seismic catalogues.

Mapping Glacier Bed Topography in Crevassed Regions: A New Passive Seismic Reflection Method Applied to Isunnguata Sermia, West Greenland

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 18, 28 September 2026.
Abstract Glacier bed topography is crucial for modeling ice mass loss. However, heavily crevassed regions are challenging to survey using conventional methods, leading to data gaps. We establish a passive seismic approach exploiting naturally occurring crevassing events recorded with a dense seismic array to image the ice–bed interface without spatial ...

The first 30 min hidden aftershocks of the 2022 September 17, ML 6.4, Guanshan, Taiwan earthquake and its seismological implications

open access: yesTerrestrial, Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences
The first 30 min of the aftershock sequence following the 2022 September 17, ML 6.4, Guanshan, Taiwan earthquake is investigated by the back-projection (BP) method.

The Role of Tectonic Inheritance in Active Rift Seismicity and Magmatism: Constraints From 3‐D Gravity Inversion and D‐InSAR Modeling of the 2025 Fentale Swarm, Ethiopia

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 18, 28 September 2026.
Abstract The role of inherited lithospheric structures in active rift seismicity and magma intrusion remains a key uncertainty in continental breakup dynamics. We investigate the January 2025 Northern Main Ethiopian Rift swarm using constrained 3‐D gravity inversion and D‐InSAR observations to characterize crustal architecture, seismicity, and active ...

Numerical Simulations of 3D Scattering Structures Reveal Systematic Underestimation of Marsquake Magnitudes

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 17, 16 September 2026.
Abstract Determining marsquake magnitudes is essential for assessing seismic activity on Mars, yet previous estimates neglect three‐dimensional (3D) scattering effects. The exceptionally long‐lasting coda of the largest recorded marsquake, S1222a, provides a unique opportunity to quantify how crustal heterogeneities affect waveform propagation and ...

Fault‐Controlled Plumbing System Beneath Lipari Volcanic Island Revealed by Seismic Matrix Imaging

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 17, 16 September 2026.
Abstract Lipari Island hosts an active magmatic–hydrothermal system, but its deep plumbing architecture remains poorly resolved due to strong seismic scattering. We apply passive seismic matrix imaging to public vertical‐component cross‐correlation functions from the dense 2018 Lipari nodal array, recovering relative‐reflectivity structures to ∼10 km ...

Economic loss estimation for earthquake hazard in Istanbul [PDF]

open access: yes
Natural hazards, especially earthquakes, cause disasters when they hit large settlements such as metropolitan areas. After the first shock, the damage is counted by deaths and injuries.
