Modelling and analysis of a basilica under earthquake loading
Journal of Cultural Heritage, 2003Abstract In this paper a basilica-type church is analysed in order to assess its structural behaviour and seismic vulnerability. For this purpose, an effective two-step procedure has been used, consisting of: (a) 3D static and dynamic linear analyses of the structural complex, and (b) 2D nonlinear push-over analysis of the single macro-elements.

An economical structural system for wind and earthquake loads
Engineering Structures, 2001Abstract An economical structural system which would mitigate undesirable vibrations due to wind and earthquake loads is being developed. In this proposed system, the inherent hysteretic damping of the knee–brace-frame (KBF) with shear yielding knee is tapped to maintain the structural integrity in the event of a severe earthquake, while the ...

Earthquake Loading on Pipebridges
1992We here consider the design loads due to earthquake-induced oscillations of a novel type of tubular bridge/tunnel (called a pipebridge), which contains a road within a tube of diameter 10m, and is submerged below the surface of the water at depths of up to 40m.

Storage Tanks Under Earthquake Loading
Applied Mechanics Reviews, 1990This is a state-of-the-art review of various treatments of earthquake loaded liquid filled shells by the methods of earthquake engineering, fluid dynamics, structural and soil dynamics, as well as the theory of stability and computational mechanics. Different types of tanks and different possibilities of tank failure will be discussed.

Reservoir Loading and Local Earthquakes
2015Shortly after Lake Meade began to fill, local earthquakes were felt, reaching a magnitude 5 earthquake about a year after the reservoir has filled to 80% capacity. For a number of years after, local earthquakes showed a close correlation in number and energy releases with seasonal peak loads; but in due time, the correlation was as close with unloading

Numerical simulation for the pile with earthquake load
2011 IEEE 3rd International Conference on Communication Software and Networks, 2011Downdrag develops when a pile is driven through a soil layer which will settle more than the pile. The estimate of downdrag forces is important to pile undergoing soil downward movement. Much numerical analysis work has been done on the behavior of single pile based on the linear or nonlinear finite element analysis, much less work has been done on ...

Robust Design Optimization for Earthquake Loads
2013The design of structures, with the help of numerical procedures, is one of the most challenging engineering tasks. The structure has to withstand all dead loads, live loads, and unpredictable events as earthquakes. Earthquake analysis itself is, due to the high lack of information, sophisticated.

The response of structures to earthquake loading
1968This thesis considers the theoretical determination of the elasto-plastic response of structures to earthquake loading. The particular structures studied are a railway bridge and four multi-storey buildings: one with a tall flexible steel frame, two others with open reinforced concrete frames and the other a reinforced concrete spandrel beam frame ...

The Earthquake Fatality Load: A Measure of Impact
Bulletin of the Seismological Society of AmericaABSTRACT A key measure of the earthquake problem in a country is the ratio of fatalities to population size. We propose that the new parameter earthquake fatality load per year objectively measures the level of the population suffering in seismically active countries, that is, it indicates the average annual cost in lives.

On the Collapse of a Masonry Tower Subjected to Earthquake Loadings
2003Some early results of a research study on the behaviour of masonry towers under the seismic actions are illustrated. The results regard analysis of the so-called "Tower of Matilde", the bell tower of the Santa Maria e San Genesio Cathedral in the medieval town of San Miniato, near Pisa (Italy).
