Detecting Total Electron Content Precursors Before Earthquakes by Examining Total Electron Content Images Based on Butterworth Filter in Convolutional Neural Networks

open access: yesIEEE Access, 2020
Daily total electron content (TEC) images created by splitting TEC maps for three time periods from September 1 to 24, 1999; from February 1 to 24, 2003; and from May 1 to 24, 2003 (Taiwan Standard Time [TST]) as training images (inputs) were used to ...

Seismic velocity precursors to the 2016 Mw 6.5 Norcia (Italy) earthquake

open access: yesGeology, 2020
Earthquakes occur as the result of long-term strain accumulation on active faults and complex transient triggering mechanisms. Although laboratory experiments show accelerating deformation patterns before failure conditions are met, imaging similar ...

Tree growth response and adaptation to climate change and climate extremes: From canopy to stem

open access: yesJournal of Integrative Plant Biology, EarlyView.
This review synthesizes the responses and adaptations of tree growth, including canopy phenology, intra‐annual wood formation dynamics, and annual stem growth, to climate change and climate extremes. It highlights key knowledge gaps for future research to support sustainable forest management and enhance forest carbon storage under ongoing climate ...

Slip weakening, strain and short-termpreseismic disturbances

open access: yesAnnals of Geophysics, 2004
The problem of short-term earthquake precursors is discussed. In contrast to the increasing number of reports on short-lived precursors of various types, direct strain measurements cannot detect clearly expressed preseismic anomalies, as follows from the

Dynamical analogy between economical crisis and earthquake dynamics within the nonextensive statistical mechanics framework

open access: yes, 2013
The field of study of complex systems considers that the dynamics of complex systems are founded on universal principles that may be used to describe a great variety of scientific and technological approaches of different types of natural, artificial ...

What Are Asset Price Bubbles? A Survey on Definitions of Financial Bubbles

open access: yesJournal of Economic Surveys, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Financial bubbles and crashes have repeatedly caused economic turmoil notably but not just during the 2008 financial crisis. However, both in the popular press as well as scientific publications, the meaning of bubble is sometimes unspecified.

Geochemical and Seismic Constraints on the Role of Mud Diapirs in Petroleum Migration and Accumulation in the Recôncavo Basin, NE Brazil

open access: yesJournal of Petroleum Geology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT In the Recôncavo Basin, Northeast of Brazil, mud diapirs have been reported for decades, but their role within the basin's petroleum system remains poorly constrained. Here, we combine 2D seismic interpretation, field observations, and organic geochemical analyses of rocks and oil seeps to investigate the relationship between diapirism and ...

Spatial–temporal variations of b-values prior to medium-to-large earthquakes in Taiwan and the feasibility of real-time precursor monitoring

open access: yesEarth, Planets and Space
This study explores the b-value variations prior to M ≥ 6.0 earthquakes in Taiwan, examining their potential as earthquake precursors. Focusing on the 2018 Hualien earthquake and others between 1999 and 2021, we found that many large earthquakes occurred

New knowledge about shock events that affected the L‐chondrite parent body from two heavily shocked L6 meteorite finds

open access: yesMeteoritics &Planetary Science, EarlyView.
Abstract We report new results from a study of shock‐related features in the L6 ordinary chondrites Northwest Africa (NWA) 4672 and NWA 12841. Our observations confirm the occurrence of eight high‐pressure (HP) minerals in each meteorite, namely, ringwoodite, majorite, akimotoite, wadsleyite, albitic jadeite, lingunite, tuite, and xieite.
