Icequakes coupled with surface displacements for predicting glacier break-off

open access: yes, 2010
A hanging glacier at the east face of Weisshorn (Switzerland) broke off in 2005. We were able to monitor and measure surface motion and icequake activity for 25 days up to three days prior to the break-off.

Circular RNA Vv‐circCOR27 modulates thermotolerance through attenuating VvHSP90.2b‐VvHsfA7a interaction in grapevine

open access: yesNew Phytologist, EarlyView.
Summary Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are single‐stranded, covalently closed RNA molecules that arise from exon back‐splicing. The identification and function investigation of circRNAs have been comprehensively explored in plants, however, the regulatory mechanisms are largely unknown.

Earthquakes: from chemical alteration to mechanical rupture

open access: yes, 1998
In the standard rebound theory of earthquakes, elastic deformation energy is progressively stored in the crust until a threshold is reached at which it is suddenly released in an earthquake.

A Three‐Stage Model of the Maturation of Nascent Policy Subsystems Toward Stable Advocacy Coalitions, With Evidence From the UK's Response to COVID‐19

open access: yesPolicy Studies Journal, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Policy subsystems are comprised of competing advocacy coalitions, in which public and private political actors with shared belief systems learn from each other and coordinate their strategies in the pursuit of influencing policy making in their favor.

Spatial and temporal b-value precursors preceding the 2008 Wenchuan, China, earthquake (Mw = 7.9): implications for earthquake prediction

open access: yes, 2020
The sudden and unexpected Wenchuan earthquake (Mw = 7.9) occurred on the Longmen Shan Fault without any definite precursors. Therefore, a new computing strategy of b-values was applied in the study area around the epicenter of the Wenchuan mainshock ...

Unpacking Resilience in Public Administration: Insights From a Meta‐Narrative Review

open access: yesPublic Administration Review, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Increasing environmental complexity and uncertainty have made organizational resilience a key concern in public administration. Yet its inherent ambiguity calls for a systematic examination of its conceptualizations, operationalizations, and applications. This meta‐narrative review synthesizes 49 studies, advancing the discourse by identifying

The synergy of earthquake precursors [PDF]

open access: yesEarthquake Science, 2011
The system of geophysical shells (lithosphere, atmosphere, ionosphere) is considered as an open complex nonlinear system with dissipation where earthquake preparation could be regarded as a self-organizing process leading to the critical state of the system.

Multiparameter monitoring of short-term earthquake precursors and its physical basis. Implementation in the Kamchatka region

open access: yes, 2016
We apply experimental approach of the multiparameter monitoring of short-term earthquake precursors which reliability was confirmed by the Lithosphere-Atmosphere-Ionosphere Coupling (LAIC) model created recently [1].

Foundations for an Operational Earthquake Prediction System

open access: yesGeosciences
Earthquake prediction is one of the most challenging enterprises of science. Any prediction system must be based on the search for a precursor appearing during the preparation phase of an earthquake in the ground, atmosphere, or ionosphere that can ...

Experimental evidence of accelerated seismic release without critical failure in acoustic emissions of compressed nanoporous materials

open access: yes, 2018
The total energy of acoustic emission (AE) events in externally stressed materials diverges when approaching macroscopic failure. Numerical and conceptual models explain this accelerated seismic release (ASR) as the approach to a critical point that ...
