Rupture process of the M s7.0 Lushan earthquake, 2013

Science China Earth Sciences, 2013
On April 20, 2013 at 8:02 am, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake occurred in Lushan County, Sichuan Province, China, which induces massive landslides, causes great losses to life and property. Based on the locations of aftershocks provided by the China Earthquake Network Center and the characteristic of Longmenshan active faults system, combined with the ...

Damage–Rupture Process of Concrete Dams Under Strong Earthquakes

International Journal of Structural Stability and Dynamics, 2014
A new concept for establishing the damage model for high concrete dams under earthquakes based on damage mechanics is presented in this paper. Unlike the conventional approach of considering the residual deformation by means of plastic-damage coupling, the proposed approach relates the degraded apparent elastic moduli of loading and unloading directly

The rupture process of the 1987 Edgecumbe earthquake, New Zealand

New Zealand Journal of Geology, and Geophysics, 1989
Abstract Long‐period body‐wave modelling of the main shock of the 1987 March 2 Edgecumbe earthquake sequence reveals a multiple rupture event with a moment of 4. 3 × 10 18 N m.

Informational analysis of Langevin equation of friction in earthquake rupture processes

Chaos: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Nonlinear Science, 2019
In this paper, we analyze the informational properties of time series of slip velocity generated by the Langevin equation of friction in two different frictional regimes: viscous and Coulombian. Representing the generated time series in the Fisher-Shannon plane (where the coordinate axes are the Fisher Information Measure and the Shannon entropy power),

Rupture Process of the Chi-Chi (Taiwan) Earthquake in 1999

Chinese Journal of Geophysics, 2005
The rupture process of the 1999 Chi-Chi, Taiwan earthquake is investigated by using co-seismic surface displacement GPS observations and far field P-wave records. In according to the tectonic analysis and distributions of aftershocks, we introduce a three-segment bending fault plane into our model.

The dynamic rupture process of the 1993 Kushiro‐oki earthquake

Journal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth, 1996
We have constructed a dynamic rapture model of the 1993 Kushiro‐oki earthquake (Mw= 7.6) that is consistent with the observed seismograms. This earthquake occurred beneath the city of Kushiro, Japan, at a depth of about 100 km, and the aftershocks are limited to a horizontal plane between a double seismic zone in the subducting slab.

Inversion of earthquake rupture process: Theory and applications

La Rivista del Nuovo Cimento, 2019
We present the theory and methods of earthquake rupture process inversion by using seismic and geodetic data, and their applications to scientific researches and earthquake emergency responses. It is shown that the knowledge obtained from these studies has much improved our understanding of the complexities of the earthquake source and causative ...

Mapping the rupture process of moderate earthquakes by inverting accelerograms

Journal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth, 1999
We present a waveform inversion method that uses recordings of small events as Green's functions to map the rupture growth of moderate earthquakes. The method fits P and S waveforms from many stations simultaneously in an iterative procedure to estimate the subevent rupture time and amplitude relative to the Green's function event.

Displacement and Geometrical Characteristics of Earthquake Surface Ruptures: Issues and Implications for Seismic-Hazard Analysis and the Process of Earthquake Rupture

Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America, 2008
There now exist about three dozen historical earthquakes for which in- vestigators have constructed maps of earthquake rupture traces accompanied by de- scriptions of the coseismic slip observed along the fault strike. The maps and slip distributions are compiled here to place observational bounds on aspects of seismic- hazard analysis and fault ...

Physics-based Simulations of Large Earthquake Rupture Processes

2021
A complete description of how an earthquake occurs can be achieved with a physically self-consistent modeling framework where wave propagation is combined with fracture mechanics to simulate the initiation, growth, and arrest of fault motion. To this end, dynamic rupture simulations are used to reproduce or predict dynamic and static deformations ...
