Slip versus dilation tendency parameter space as a tool for prospecting structurally controlled geothermal systems in greenfield: insights from the greater Ruhr region

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
This study highlights that with the static and time‐dependent evolution of slip versus dilation tendency parameter space, structurally controlled deep geothermal systems can be selected within areas of higher permeability and lower seismic hazard. Abstract Faults play a vital role in the Earth's hydraulic system by facilitating fluid flow when dilating

A method of waveform inversion for earthquake rupture process.

open access: yesJournal of Physics of the Earth, 1986
We developed an inversion method to infer the earthquake rupture process from far-field body waves. The earthquake source is modeled by a space-time dependent slip on a fault plane. The slip motion at a point on the fault plane is assumed to be a ramp function in time, which is specified by the final dislocation, the rise time, and the time when the ...

Failure characteristics analysis of the inclined interlayer during water‐soluble cavity construction of underground salt caverns for large‐scale energy storage

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
In the process of water‐soluble cavern construction of salt cavern energy storage, since the interlayer does not dissolve in water easily, sudden collapse will cause engineering accidents such as bending and damage of the inner tube of the cavern.

Critical expansion points: Mechanical signs of surrounding rock instability

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
This study proposes the Rock Bearing‐Expansion Model (RockBEM) with critical expansion points (CEPs) to quantify post‐peak damage stages in deep‐buried rock masses via plane strain compression test (PSCT). CEP hysteresis&interval ratios reveal bearing performance dynamics and failure severity, advancing mechanistic insights into deep underground rock ...

An optimizing microseismic method for rock burst early warning based on mining production process

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
A classification early warning method of rock burst based on hourly microseismic data is proposed, which can be combined with the on‐site production process to provide more timely warning. Abstract Microseismic (MS) events have been reported in nearly every coal mining country, which could well lead to rock burst in underground coal mines.

Source Parameters of the 2005 Mw 7.2 Miyagi-Oki, Japan, Earthquake as Inferred from Teleseismic P-Waves

open access: yesTerrestrial, Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences, 2010
We investigate the fault parameters of the 2005 Miyagi-Oki (Japan) earthquake using duration variations of teleseismic P-waves. The results show that the earthquake has a thrust-type mechanism and a seismic moment of 4.46 ¡_ 1019 Nm.

Relationship between rupture process complexity and earthquake size [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth, 2006
We studied the complexity of waveforms for two shallow crustal earthquake sequences in Japan. Using 47 earthquakes of the 2003 northern Miyagi sequence and 95 events of the 2004 mid‐Niigata sequence, we estimated the number of complex and simple P waveforms for events with magnitudes from M3.1 to M6.6.

Semi‐analytical solution for the stability of deep vertical shaft considering time‐dependent rock‐structure interaction

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
A novel cavity contraction solution and multilayer shaft wall model were developed to analyze deep shaft stability, considering rock viscosity, support structures, and water pressure, with successful validation through a Hulusu Coal Mine case study.
