Source region of the Matsushiro earthquakes

open access: yesEos, Transactions American Geophysical Union, 1969
Teleseismic and near‐field data of the Matsushiro earthquakes were studied collectively in order to clarify the focal mechanisms of the swarm activity. The author first applied the Aki and Brune techniques to the Love waves recorded at Gifu, 180 km southwest of Matsushiro, and discovered that the seismic moment of major swarm shocks is about 0.7 ˜ 3.5 ...

Performance assessment of a potential underground thermal storage facility: Case study of the closed mine Prosper‐Haniel in the Ruhr coal mining area in Germany

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
This study demonstrates the feasibility of an underground closed‐loop thermal storage facility at a post‐mining site, intended for seasonal heat energy storage. Its principal design shows water flow directions in winter and summer (1, 2), heat pumps (3), an upper water reservoir (4), and connecting pipes (5).

Abundant Quasi‐Repeating Earthquakes Occurring Within Repeater Sequences on the Erkenek‐Pütürge Fault (SE Turkey)

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters
Repeaters are known as earthquakes that rupture the same asperity in similar manners. However, the complexity of repeater asperities is poorly investigated.

Characterization of near-source ground motions with earthquake simulations [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
We examine the characteristics of long-period near-source ground motions by conducting a sensitivity study with variations in six earthquake source parameters for both a strike-slip fault (M 7.0-7.1) and a thrust fault (M 6.6-7.0). The directivity of the

Seismic analysis and design of tunnels within fault ground: A review

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
The research methods of seismic response of tunnels within fault ground, including field investigations, analytical solutions, physical experiments, and numerical simulations, and seismic countermeasures are discussed. The present study examines the shortcomings and limitations of the current research and design, and puts forward proposals for future ...

Unveiling spatial heterogeneity in urban underground space development patterns and mechanisms for differentiated planning: A points of interest‐based study of Shanghai

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
This study investigated the spatial patterns and development mechanisms of urban underground space (UUS) in Shanghai using underground points of interest data. It revealed distinct development mechanisms between the main city and suburbs, highlighting the need for differentiated UUS planning and policies to optimize underground space resources ...

Long-Run Consequences of Natural Disasters: Evidence from Tangshan [PDF]

open access: yes
Exploiting Tangshan 1976 - the deadliest earthquake in the 20th century - as a source of exogenous variation, we estimate the long-run effect of a historical shock on contemporary socio-economic outcomes.

On the seismicity of the Karabakh and East Zangezur territories of Azerbaijan

open access: yesГеология и геофизика Юга России
Relevance. This paper examines the seismic and tectonic characteristics of Azerbaijan, with emphasis on the Karabakh and Eastern Zangezur regions. The study is relevant because the absence of seismic stations in these areas has led to a prolonged lack ...

Preliminary results of the survey on the source region of the Hokkaido-Nansei-Oki earthquake.

open access: yes, 1994
This paper describes the results of sea bottom survey in the source region of the 1993 Hokkaido Nansei-Oki Earthquake (off Southwest Hokkaido). The earthquake, of magnitude 7. 8 occurred in the Japan Sea off southwest Hokkaido fom 12 July 1993 and caused

Dynamic cracking properties and generating conditions of coal under rapid gas release

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
Gas release tests revealed that crack initiation and propagation are jointly controlled by initial crack length, residual strength, and gas release velocity. A new outburst risk coefficient was thus developed from a fracture mechanics perspective, offering a novel predictive approach.
