Longer Time-Scale Variability of Atmospheric Vertical Motion over the Tibetan Plateau and North Pacific and the Climate in East Asia

open access: yesAtmosphere, 2021
The vertical motion of air is closely related to the amount of precipitation that falls in a particular region. The Tibetan Plateau and the North Pacific are important determinants of the East Asian climate.

Role of Histidine‐Containing Peptoids in Accelerating the Kinetics of Calcite Growth

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Amphiphilic histidine‐containing peptoids mimic carbonic anhydrase (CA) to accelerate calcite step growth. In the presence of Zn2+, they promote the deprotonation of HCO3−, the desolvation of Ca2+, and the reorganization of interfacial hydration layers, thereby reducing the activation barrier for calcite growth.

Nano‐ and Micro‐Sized Solid Materials Used as Antiviral Agents

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Due to the rise of viral infections in humans and possible viral outbreaks, the use of nano‐ or micro‐sized materials as antiviral agents is rapidly increasing. This review explores their antiviral properties against RNA and DNA viruses, either as a prevention or a treatment tool, by delving into their mechanisms of action and how to properly assess ...

Characteristics of the Nonoccurrence of Tropical Cyclones in the Western North Pacific in August 2014

open access: yesAtmosphere, 2016
This study identified the causes of the nonoccurrence of tropical cyclones (TCs) in August 2014 by examining large-scale environments. First, over the previous 30 years, the TC genesis frequency in August showed an overall statistically significant ...

Geometrically Tunable Scaffold‐Free Muscle Bioconstructs for Treating Volumetric Muscle Loss

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Volumetric muscle loss is associated with traumatic muscle resulting in permanent functional impairment. Mold‐based, scaffold‐free, high‐density muscle tissue bioconstructs are developed in customizable geometric shapes and sizes. The transplanted rectangular solid‐shaped muscle bioconstructs improved muscle force recovery and tissue regeneration in ...

Holocene Ecohydrological Variability on the East Coast of Kamchatka

open access: yesFrontiers in Earth Science, 2019
The Late Glacial and Holocene climate of the western North Pacific is less studied than that of the eastern North Pacific. While it is well known that strong east-west gradients in the tropical Pacific Ocean influence terrestrial climate, we seek to ...
