How interference between the North Atlantic Oscillation and the tropical Indo‐Pacific convection modulates wave trains along the subtropical jet: Impacts on the Asian winter climate

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
This study reveals that the combined effects of the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) and anomalous Indo‐Pacific Walker circulation on the excitation of the wave train along the wintertime subtropical jet strongly depend on their phase combination. Their impacts interfere constructively or destructively over South Asia, leading to notable differences in

Research on the Influence of SST in Different Regions on the Interannual Variability of Winter Fog Days over Eastern China

open access: yesGaoyuan qixiang
Based on observational data, it is evident that fog occurrence in Eastern China is notably higher during winter compared to other months.Spatial analysis of climatological statistics reveals a distinct heterogeneity, dividing Eastern China into northern ...

Using microwave imager observations to improve the ocean temperature in a coupled NWP system

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
A recent upgrade to the ECMWF IFS has implemented outer‐loop coupling between the atmosphere and the ocean. This work uses this method to pass ocean skin temperature estimates derived from satellite‐borne microwave imagers to the ocean data assimilation system; the updated ocean state is then passed back to the atmospheric system.

Asymmetry in the effect of North Atlantic sea surface temperature on the eddy‐driven jet

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
Projections of climate over Europe and the Atlantic are uncertain due to the uncertainty surrounding future changes in North Atlantic sea surface temperatures (SSTs). Here, we demonstrate that warming in the North Atlantic Ocean is linked to a transition to a negative phase of the North Atlantic Oscillation, as well as to an equatorward displacement of

Revealing the hidden link of the Walker circulation on heavy rainfall patterns in the Eastern Pacific

open access: yesCommunications Earth & Environment
Understanding the relationship between tropical heavy rainfall and large-scale circulation provides valuable insights for improving the climate models. Here we use Gaussian Mixture Model to identify two distinct types of heavy rainfall over the tropical ...

Influence of Asian-Pacific Oscillation on Precipitation in Central Eastern China during Autumn (1960–2016)

open access: yesAdvances in Meteorology, 2019
The Asian-Pacific Oscillation (APO) plays an important role in precipitation in Central Eastern China (CEC). This study analyzed observational and reanalysis data to investigate CEC precipitation during autumn (1960–2016) and its association with the APO.

Coupled observation‐operator approximations in outer‐loop coupling data assimilation

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
We present a methodology for coupled variational data assimilation that allows the effect of coupled observation operators whilst maintaining separate minimisations across model components. This allows us to constrain the atmosphere, ocean, and sea‐ice components of our coupled model directly from satellite radiances. We illustrate the system in action

Subseasonal forecasts of the MJO and convectively coupled equatorial waves in ACCESS‐S2 and GraphCast: A multi‐year analysis

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
ACCESS‐S2 performs better in predicting longer time‐scale and slower moving waves (MJO and equatorial Rossby waves), while GraphCast performs better in predicting shorter and faster moving waves (Kelvin and mixed Rossby–gravity waves). However, both models systematically underestimate precipitation amplitude across all wave types, especially over the ...

The role of the tropical Atlantic in tropical Pacific climate variability

open access: yesnpj Climate and Atmospheric Science
Interactions between Atlantic and Pacific Oceans can affect tropical Pacific variability and its global impacts at both interannual and decadal timescales. Thus, a deepened understanding of the coupled Atlantic-Pacific interactions is needed.

Big Bird: A global dataset of birds in drone imagery annotated to species level

open access: yesRemote Sensing in Ecology and Conservation, EarlyView.
Drones are a valuable tool for surveying birds, but manually detecting and identifying birds in drone images is costly. We assembled a diverse dataset of 23 865 images of birds captured with 21 different drones across 11 countries. We labelled 4824 of these images, detailing the location, species, posture category, age category, and sex of 49 990 birds
