An efficiency comparison was made between a 2400 groove/mm holographically-ruled diffraction grating and the 7 9-groove/mm echelle grating in the coude spectrograph of the 2.7-m telescope at McDonald Observatory under conditions typical of high-resolution astronomical spectroscopy.

Many astrophysical problems can only be solved by using high dispersion spectrographs. Until recently, Coude-spectrographs have been the most commonly used type of spectrographs for this purpose.
