ESPRESSO: The next European exoplanet hunter

open access: yes, 2014
The acronym ESPRESSO stems for Echelle SPectrograph for Rocky Exoplanets and Stable Spectroscopic Observations; this instrument will be the next VLT high resolution spectrograph.

Distributions of non‐native and native plants are not determined by the same environmental factors

open access: yesEcological Solutions and Evidence, Volume 5, Issue 4, October–December 2024.
Distributions of non‐native plant species are driven more strongly by anthropogenic variables than distributions of native plant species, though climate is the most powerful predictor in both species groups. Species distribution models should therefore be fitted with different variables based on the study species' degree of nativeness.

The hectometric modelling challenge: Gaps in the current state of the art and ways forward towards the implementation of 100‐m scale weather and climate models

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, Volume 150, Issue 765, Page 4671-4708, October 2024 Part B.
Research shows that 100‐m scale models can improve the representation of several meteorological phenomena. Here, improved resolution of either the atmosphere or the surface is important for modelling urban hazards. This review article surveys the challenges in transitioning these models into practical forecast systems and suggests ways forward.

The Physical Model in Action: Quality Control for X-Shooter

open access: yes, 2010
The data reduction pipeline for the VLT 2nd generation instrument X-Shooter uses a physical model to determine the optical distortion and derive the wavelength calibration.

High-Fidelity Spectroscopy at the Highest Resolutions [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
High-fidelity spectroscopy presents challenges for both observations and in designing instruments. High-resolution and high-accuracy spectra are required for verifying hydrodynamic stellar atmospheres and for resolving intergalactic absorption-line ...

Relationships Between HCl, H2O, Aerosols, and Temperature in the Martian Atmosphere: 1. Climatological Outlook

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Planets, Volume 129, Issue 8, August 2024.
Abstract Detecting trace gases such as hydrogen chloride (HCl) in Mars' atmosphere is among the primary objectives of the ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO) mission. Terrestrially, HCl is closely associated with active volcanic activity, so its detection on Mars was expected to point to some form of active magmatism/outgassing.

First constraint on cosmological variation of the proton-to-electron mass ratio from two independent telescopes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
A high signal-to-noise spectrum covering the largest number of hydrogen lines (90 H2 lines and 6 HD lines) in a high redshift object was analyzed from an observation along the sight-line to the bright quasar source J2123$-$005 with the UVES spectrograph ...

Strong Localized Pumping of Water Vapor to High Altitudes on Mars During the Perihelion Season

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 51, Issue 14, 28 July 2024.
Abstract Here we present water vapor vertical profiles observed with the ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter/Nadir and Occultation for MArs Discovery instrument during the perihelion and Southern summer solstice season (LS = 240°–300°) in three consecutive Martian Years 34, 35, and 36.

Turtles for the ancestors: A zooarchaeological study of ritual deposits on Fakahina, Tuamotu archipelago (French Polynesia)

open access: yesArchaeology in Oceania, Volume 59, Issue 2, Page 176-197, July 2024.
Abstract Rituals and feasting ceremonies at Polynesian marae depict culturally complex relationships between humans and animals that cannot be explained by subsistence alone. In Central‐East Polynesia, this topic still requires the elaboration of a “ritual zooarchaeology” framework. Using sea turtle assemblages from three sacred sites on Fakahina atoll
