Use of road underpasses by mammals and a monitor lizard in eastern Australia and consideration of the prey‐trap hypothesis

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, 2022
Road networks continue to expand globally with predictable effects on ecological systems. Research into the effectiveness of road underpasses and overpasses for wildlife has been concentrated in North America and Europe.

Skeletons of the monotremes in the collections of the Army Medical Museum at Washington [PDF]

open access: yes, 1921
Attention was recently invited to the existence in the collections of the Army Medical Museum, of the Surgeon General's Office, at Washington, of the mounted skeletons of certain of the Monotremata; and as these curious mammals are now becoming ...

Are Hibernators Toast? Global Climate Change and Prolonged Seasonal Hibernation

open access: yesGlobal Change Biology, Volume 32, Issue 1, January 2026.
This review examines how global climate change impacts mammalian hibernators, emphasizing physiological, ecological and phenological aspects. Many hibernating species already inhabit extreme environments, thus are at risk as climate variability intensifies.

3D Scanning System for Automatic High-Resolution Plant Phenotyping

open access: yes, 2016
Thin leaves, fine stems, self-occlusion, non-rigid and slowly changing structures make plants difficult for three-dimensional (3D) scanning and reconstruction -- two critical steps in automated visual phenotyping.

An Imaging‐Guided Neural Model Explains Lexical Stress Alteration in Acquired Apraxia of Speech

open access: yesHuman Brain Mapping, Volume 46, Issue 17, 01 December 2025.
This study reanalysed neuroimaging data from individuals with acquired apraxia of speech (AOS) to simulate lesion effects in the GODIVA neurocomputational speech model. The lesioned model reproduced characteristic lexical stress alterations in AOS, supporting a mechanistic explanation of the disorder involving an engaged feedback control system and ...

Radiometric Calibration of a Dual-Wavelength, Full-Waveform Terrestrial Lidar

open access: yesSensors, 2016
Radiometric calibration of the Dual-Wavelength Echidna® Lidar (DWEL), a full-waveform terrestrial laser scanner with two simultaneously-pulsing infrared lasers at 1064 nm and 1548 nm, provides accurate dual-wavelength apparent reflectance (ρapp), a ...

Identification and functional characterization of a novel monotreme- specific antibacterial protein expressed during lactation. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2013
Monotremes are the only oviparous mammals and exhibit a fascinating combination of reptilian and mammalian characters. They represent a component of synapsidal reproduction by laying shelled eggs which are incubated outside the mother's body.

Review of the tetrapod skull–neck boundary: implications for the evolution of the atlas–axis complex

open access: yesBiological Reviews, Volume 100, Issue 6, Page 2435-2470, December 2025.
ABSTRACT This review describes variation in modern and fossil occiput–atlas–axis complex anatomy of total group Tetrapoda with the aim of documenting the range of structural variation throughout their evolutionary history to establish grounds for comparison of the complex between tetrapod clades.

Monitoring biodiversity on a budget: Optimizing camera trap selection in a biodiversity hotspot

open access: yesConservation Science and Practice, Volume 7, Issue 12, December 2025.
This study evaluates two common camera trap models used to monitor wildlife in a global biodiversity hotspot. We found that while Reconyx cameras provide marginally higher detectability, Swift cameras consistently achieve higher statistical power for the same cost, making them more suitable for broad‐scale conservation monitoring programs.

Complete Rainforest Elevational Gradient Reveals Unusual Diversity Patterns of Non‐Volant Mammals in New Guinea

open access: yesDiversity and Distributions, Volume 31, Issue 12, December 2025.
ABSTRACT Aim We address a critical gap in the elevational community ecology of tropical non‐volant mammals in the Australian and Oceanian zoogeographic realms. Specifically, we document alpha and beta diversity, environmental predictors and community composition of individual clades in relation to their ecology and evolutionary history along an ...
