Well-being and consumer culture: a different kind of public health problem? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
The concept of well-being is now of interest to many disciplines;as a consequence, it presents an increasingly complex and contested territory. We suggest that much current thinking about well-being can be summarized in terms of four main discourses ...

Pattern Formation in Non‐Equilibrium Architected Materials

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
This article demonstrates an artificial mechanical system ‐ a robotic metamaterial ‐ as an accessible and versatile platform within which to explore and prescribe the reaction‐diffusion driven pattern formation hitherto associated with comparatively less accessible and versatile non‐equilibrium biological and chemical systems.

Anti‐Slip Material‐Based Strategies and Approaches

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
This review highlights the principle mechanisms of slipping at the microscale, linking contact mechanics with a friction behavior model for surface interfaces. Main strategies to develop anti‐slip properties to the surfaces are discussed alongside standardized testing approaches.

The discourse of ecological proximity in The Famished Road and Wizard of the Crow: A postcolonial ecocritical analysis

open access: yesSocial Sciences and Humanities Open
This study explicates the discourse of ecological proximity embedded in two postcolonial African novels. It employed ecocritical theory informed by posthumanism, ‘aesthetics of proximity’ (Iheka, 2018) and postcolonial ecocriticism as critical venture to

The challenge of ecological justice in a globalising world [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
Ecological justice is a challenging concept in relation to the current development of agriculture, including organic agriculture, because it positions social and ecological interests against market liberalism and economic growth.

Micropillar‐Engineered Hybrid Adhesive Patch for Surface‐Conformable and Directional Adhesion

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
This work presents a surface‐conformable hybrid adhesive integrating height‐optimized hexagonal micropillars with open‐rectangular cuts. The micropillars enhance rough‐surface contact and microscale crack arrest, while the cuts guide and reverse interfacial cracks for strong and directional adhesion. The multiscale architecture achieves robust pull‐off

Decoding ‘Environmental’ Discourse: a Linguistic Approach to Improving Education for Sustainable Development

open access: yesForum Pedagogiczne
In the face of accelerating ecological degradation, and in line with interdisciplinary efforts to enhance the quality of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), we propose that this field ought to evolve not only in content but also in language ...

CONFUCIANISM, KOREAN CONFUCIANISM AND ECOLOGICAL DISCOURSE

open access: yesActa Koreana, 2011
Many scholars have sought to find the fundamental causes of the current environmental and ecological crisis in the anthropocentric view of nature and the mechanical view of the world. In this regard, there has been a gradual increase in the number of scholars who, during the process of searching for alternative views of nature and the world, have paid ...

Soft Robotic Snake with Tunable Undulatory Gait for Efficient Underwater Locomotion

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
This study designs an underwater soft snake robot using 3D‐printed soft actuators, controlled by specific signals to generate sinusoidal undulation. Results show a positive correlation between speed and swing amplitude, with optimal performance at 2/3π phase offset, PLA tail, 1.2 voltage growth rate, and 6s undulation period achieving a maximum speed ...
