Smallholder Coffee in the Global Economy—A Framework to Explore Transformation Alternatives of Traditional Agroforestry for Greater Economic, Ecological, and Livelihood Viability

open access: yesFrontiers in Sustainable Food Systems, 2022
Sixty percent of global coffee is produced from farms of <5 ha. Studies show that returns from such farms do not generate a living income for producers or workers threatening supplies.

Processing Tomato–Durum Wheat Rotation under Integrated, Organic and Mulch-Based No-Tillage Organic Systems: Yield, N Balance and N Loss

open access: yesAgronomy, 2019
In a 4-year study, the biannual crop rotation processing tomato−durum wheat was applied to three cropping systems: (i) an innovative organic coupled with no-tillage (ORG+) where an autumn-sown cover crop was terminated by roller-crimping and then ...

Precision agricultural data and ecosystem services: Can we put the pieces together?

open access: yesEcological Solutions and Evidence, 2023
Ecosystem services can maintain or increase crop yield in agricultural systems, but data to support management decisions are expensive and time‐consuming to collect. Furthermore, relationships derived from small‐scale plot data may not apply to ecosystem

Bird Functional Diversity in Agroecosystems and Secondary Forests of the Tropical Andes

open access: yesDiversity, 2021
Agricultural systems have increased in extension and intensity worldwide, altering vertebrate functional diversity, ecosystem functioning, and ecosystemic services. However, the effects of open monoculture crops on bird functional diversity remain little

Intelligent Tutoring Systems for Adult Learning in STEM Disciplines

open access: yesNew Directions for Adult and Continuing Education, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Intelligent tutoring systems (ITS) are reshaping adult learning in STEM by providing adaptive, data‐driven instruction across classrooms, workplaces, and informal environments. In the context of ITS, this article compares generative AI, which creates personalized explanations and practice materials, with explainable AI, which focuses on ...

Are intensification and winter wheat yield increase efficient?

open access: yesPlant, Soil and Environment, 2017
The results of small-plot field trials of international comparisons of a series of crop management practices for winter wheat grown during 2014-2016 on fertile soils of Central Moravia were assessed.

Innovative Processing of Compacted Waste Aluminum Alloy Powders via Controlled Remelting and Solidification

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study demonstrates an efficient recycling route for out‐of‐spec AlSi10Mg atomized powders through compaction and arc remelting followed by suction casting. By correlating compaction load, cooling rate, and resulting microstructure, we show that intermediate pressures (50–80 kN) and rapid cooling refine dendrites, reduce porosity, and enhance ...

High Seeding Rates and Low Soil Nitrogen Environments Optimize Weed Suppression and Profitability in Organic No-Till Planted Soybean

open access: yesFrontiers in Agronomy, 2021
No-till planting crops into rolled-crimped cover crops can improve soil health while reducing labor and fuel requirements compared with traditional tillage-based production. However, little information is available to help farmers optimize the management

Recycling of NiTi Shape Memory Alloys: Fundamental and Technological Aspects of a Vacuum Induction Melting Processing Route

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The present study investigates recycling of NiTi shape memory alloys via vacuum induction melting. An ingot was synthesized from elemental Ni and Ti and subjected to three subsequent remelting cycles. Remelting increases process durations and impurity levels and adversely affects microstructures and functional properties.
