Linking Plant Metabolomics with Fungal Functional Dynamics Reveals a Noncanonical S‐R‐C Adaptive Trajectory

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Using field‐based holo‐omics, we demonstrate that developmental shifts in sorghum leaf metabolomes drive a noncanonical fungal succession from stress tolerators (S) through ruderals (R) to competitors (C). Antifungal metabolites in young leaves select for S strategists with expanded genomes, transient maltose pulses during flowering favor fast‐growing ...

Bioinspired Morphology‐Decoupled Soft Gripper with Enhanced Bidirectional Grasping Capability

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Inspired by biological predation, a novel gripper decouples cross‐modal grasping via dual morphological configurations. Synergistically integrating hybrid rigid and soft coupled fingers with a metamaterial palm, the system performs active compliant grasping for static objects and passive cage capture for dynamic targets.

Intelligent Behavior Depends on the Ecological Niche.

open access: yesKünstliche Intell., 2021
In this interview, Pierre-Yves Oudeyer outlines his perspective on the future of AI, and discusses directions for machines models of human-like intelligence. He explains how neuro-cognitive and evolutionary theories of human cognition should further inform artificial intelligence.

Niche shifts after long-distance dispersal events in bipolar sedges (Carex, Cyperaceae) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
PREMISE OF THE STUDY: Bipolar species represent the greatest biogeographical disjunction on Earth, raising many questions about the colonization and adaptive processes behind such striking distribution.

An evaluation of transferability of ecological niche models

open access: yesEcography, 2018
Ecological niche modeling (ENM) is used widely to study species’ geographic distributions. ENM applications frequently involve transferring models calibrated with environmental data from one region to other regions or times that may include novel ...

Microbial Odorant Detection Guides Drosophila Parasitoids Seeking Hosts in Fermenting Fruits

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Yeast microbes in fermenting fruits attract both host flies and their parasitoid wasps. Female Leptopilina boulardi detect yeast‐emitted ethyl esters via two olfactory receptors, LbouOR167 and LbouOR136. A conserved residue, Leu159, is critical for binding these compounds, enabling female wasps to locate host‐rich habitats.

Livelisystems: a conceptual framework integrating social, ecosystem, development and evolutionary theory [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Human activity poses multiple environmental challenges for ecosystems that have intrinsic value and also support that activity. Our ability to address these challenges is constrained, inter alia, by weaknesses in cross disciplinary understandings of ...
