Carrion ecology: concepts, interdisciplinary synthesis, and perspectives

open access: yesBiological Reviews, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Carrion is a ubiquitous resource in both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, yet it has long been overlooked in ecological research. Over the past two decades, studies on carrion and the many organisms that exploit it have flourished, revealing not only wide‐ranging ecological functions but also significance far beyond ecology.

The Ecological Niche

1974
The environmental conditions that permit a population to survive permanently, and with which this population interacts, today are usually designated as its “ecological niche.” Originally, the term “niche” did not have the same meaning for all ecologists but this need not be considered here. We above define and use it in the sense of Hutchinson (1958).

Conserved Ecological Niches

Science, 1999
In their report “Conservatism of ecological niches in evolutionary time” (20 Aug., p. [1265][1]), A. T. Peterson et al. demonstrate that geographically isolated sister taxa show little differentiation in ecological niche. Their results imply that ecology diverges slowly in allopatry (the geographic isolation of species), and the authors therefore ...
