Ecosystem Service Assessments in Water Policy Implementation: An Analysis in Urban and Rural Estuaries

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2019
Coastal waters provide a wide range of ecosystem services (ES), but are under intensive human use, face fast degradation and are subject to increasing pressures and changes in near future. As consequence, European Union (EU) water policies try to protect,

Degradable Magnetic Composites from Recycled NdFeB Magnets for Soft Actuation and Sensing

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
This work presents a degradable soft magnetic composite made from recycled NdFeB particles embedded in a gelatin‐based organogel. The material is processed into magnetic sensors and soft robotic components, which can later be dissolved in a green solvent to recover NdFeB magnetic particles.

Multimodal Engagement Assessment in Children During Invented Story Paradigm With a Social Robot

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
A multimodal framework is proposed to assess children's engagement during storytelling interactions with a social robot. Gaze, physiological, and behavioral data are combined and validated against observer ratings. An automated gaze‐labeling strategy is introduced, and supervised classifiers achieve high accuracy. The study supports scalable engagement

A Pentaradial and Bilateral Combined Photoreception System in the Sea Cucumber is Mediated by a Blue Light‐Sensitive R‐Opsin

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
The sea cucumber Holothuria leucospilota detects blue and adjacent wavelengths of light via an r‐opsin with a maximum absorption at 459 nm. In the oral tentacles, papillae, and tube feet, distinct light‐sensing structures with specialized morphologies are formed, constituting a unique pentaradial and bilateral combined photoreception system.

Evaluation of photosynthetic Taxa in the Venice Lagoon from the nineteenth century to present day

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science
The Venice Lagoon is the largest transitional environment within the Mediterranean Sea (almost 550 km2). Being a transitional environment, it contains many different ecological niches, hence the biodiversity in this environment is very high.

Phytoplankton in the ecological status assessment of European lakes – advantages and constraints

open access: yesEnvironmental Protection and Natural Resources, 2016
Although the phytoplankton indices describing the response of phytoplankton to the eutrophication have been developed and used for many years in the routine lake monitoring programme in some countries, the implementation of the Water Framework Directive (
