Ecological Adaptation Mechanisms Underlying Successful Plant Reproduction

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
During floral induction, various environmental and endogenous signals converge to regulate the florigen protein, which is transported from leaves to the SAM to initiate flowering. Within the SAM, a complex network of receptor kinases and small peptides orchestrates floral development with high spatiotemporal precision.

Controlled Ecological Life Support Systems: CELSS 1985 Workshop

open access: yes, 1986
Various topics related to closed ecological systems are discussed. Space habitats, vegetative growth, photosynthesis, recycling, culture techniques, waste utilization bioreactors and controlled atmospheres on space stations are among the topics ...

Corals and Reef‐Dwelling Fish Regulate Carbon Storage and Cycling Processes in Coral Reef Ecosystems

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Coral reefs are biodiversity hotspots, yet their role in carbon storage and cycling remains poorly understood. Using field surveys and modeling in the South China Sea, we reveal the overlooked potential of carbon storage in reef ecosystems and how reef fish, corals, and surface sediment jointly shape reef carbon reservoirs.

Innovative technology and sustainable development of organic dairy farming : the case of automatic milking systems in Denmark

open access: yes, 2009
Development of organic dairy farming in Denmark is characterized by up-scaling, increasing productivity and automation. Increasing discussion on compliance with organic principles and sustainability has been forwarded. Automatic milking systems (AMS) are

β‐Elemene Rescues Radiation‐Induced Enteritis by Orchestrating a Host‐Microbiome Circuit That Fuels Epigenetic DNA Repair

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study elucidates that β‐elemene promotes cellular uptake of L. gasseri‐derived lactate by enhancing the membrane translocation of MCT1 in a CD147‐dependent manner. Intracellular lactate, through the lactylation of RBBP4 at the K26 site, recruits EP300 to the promoter regions of downstream genes (POLD1/POLD3), catalyzing H3K27ac modification.

The role of plant disease in the development of controlled ecological life support systems

open access: yes, 1986
Plant diseases could be important factors affecting growth of higher plants in Closed Ecological Life Support Systems (CELSS). Disease control, therefore, will be needed to maintain healthy plants.

Approaches for mitigating the environmental impact of greenhouse horticulture [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Greenhouse horticulture creates environmental issues of different kinds. Use of energy for heating and lighting and pollution by pesticides and nutrients are major known problems, but impacts on the landscape and light emissions from supplementary ...

Mapping the “Supply–Demand–Flow” of Ecosystem Services for Ecosystem Management in China

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study develops a “supply–demand–flow” framework clarifies how ecosystem services move between regions by distinguishing potential and actual supply and demand. Using integrated biophysical–socioeconomic modeling, nine services in China were mapped.

Adult Sex Ratio as a Demographic Feedback Linking Mating Systems, Parental Care, and Evolution

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Breeding systems are some of the most diverse social behavior, and our team is investigation the evolutionary causes of this diversity. This review summarises our research carried out at the University of Bath. We argue that demographic components of wild populations, especially the adult sex ratio, plays a key role driving breeding system variation ...

Creation of Closed Ecological Life Support Systems: Results, Critical Problems and Potentials

open access: yes, 2020
As experiments have shown, a closed ecological life support system based on a biological material exchange is fully realizable and contains possibilities for further improvement.
