Carbon recycling in materially closed ecological life support systems

Biosystems, 1988
Materially closed microbial ecosystems represent model life support systems for the future human habitation of space. These ecosystems when subjected to a constant energy flux seem to be reliable and self-sufficient systems for recycling of biologically produced carbon compounds.

CLOSED ECOLOGICAL SYSTEMS: FROM THE BIOSPHERE TO LIFE SUPPORT SYSTEMS AND BACK

Вестник Российской академии наук, 2023
The paper provides a brief overview of the available facts and ideas about the nature of climate change. Theproblems of ecological research, which are becoming more acute in relation to biosphere research, are considered: this is the problem of data deficit and the problem of the uniqueness of ecosystems.

The legacy of biosphere 2 for the study of biospherics and closed ecological systems

Advances in Space Research, 2003
The unprecedented challenges of creating Biosphere 2, the world's first laboratory for biospherics, the study of global ecology and long-term closed ecological system dynamics, led to breakthrough developments in many fields, and a deeper understanding of the opportunities and difficulties of material closure. This paper will review accomplishments and

Safe and Ecological Refluxing with a Closed‐Loop Air Cooling System

ChemSusChem, 2016
AbstractOff‐the‐shelf computer cooling hardware was used to construct a closed‐loop air cooling system (CLACS) that is distinguished by scalability, low energy, and no tap water consumption. Constructed to be generally used with laboratory condensers, the system was tested with several common low and high boiling solvents and showed a condensation ...

Population dynamics of an algal–bacterial cenosis in closed ecological system

Advances in Space Research, 2005
The paper deals with microalgae-bacteria interrelationships in the "autotroph-heterotroph" aquatic biotic cycle. Explanations of why and how algal-bacterial ecosystems are formed still remain controversial. The paper presents results of experimental and theoretical investigations of the functioning of the algal-bacterial cenosis (the microalga ...

Biosphere II: Engineering of Manned, Closed Ecological Systems

Journal of Aerospace Engineering, 1991
Space Biospheres and Ventures, a private, for-profit firm, has undertaken a major research and development project in the study of biospheres, with the objective of creating and producing biospheres. Biosphere II-scheduled for completion in March 1991-will be essentially isolated from the existing biosphere by a closed structure, composed of components

Computer modeling of the biotic cycle formation in a closed ecological system

Advances in Space Research, 2001
The process of biotic turnover in a closed ecological system (CES) with an external energy flow was analyzed by mathematical modeling of the biotic cycle formation. The formation of hierarchical structure in model CESs is governed by energy criteria.

Designing a Closed Ecological Life Support System for Plants, Overview

open access: yes, 2018
Humanitys plans to further explore space require the development of bio-regenerative life support systems (BLSS) fully incorporated into space stations, transit-vehicles, and eventually in habitats on the Moon and Mars. These concepts aim to decrease the

Closed Ecological Systems, Space Life Support and Biospherics

2010
This chapter explores the development of a new type of scientific tool – man-made closed ecological systems. These systems have had a number of applications within the past 50 years. They are unique tools for investigating fundamental processes and interactions of ecosystems.

Opportunities and constraints of closed man-made ecological systems on the moon

Advances in Space Research, 1994
Abstract Most scenarios for a manned lunar base include a combination of physical-chemical and bioregenerative life support systems. Especially on the lunar surface, however, there is a series of special environmental factors which seriously affect the organisms suitable for food production and biological regeneration of the habitat atmosphere and ...
