Clusterization‐Triggered Emission from Cellulose‐Based Luminophores in Dilute Aqueous Solution through Imine Formation

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Clusterization‐triggered emission is realized in dilute aqueous solution by introducing imine linkages into cellulose‐based luminophores. Imine functionalization creates O/N‐rich, hydrogen‐bonded clustered microenvironments that stabilize emissive states and restrict molecular motions. Luminescence is tunable by amine type and multiplicity.

Sustainable Electrochemical Synthesis of High‐Quality MXenes: Mechanistic Insights, Applications, Challenges, and Technological Prospects

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Electrochemical etching provides an eco‐friendly alternative to hazardous HF methods for MXene production. This approach facilitates the selective isolation of the A‐layer from MAX phases with tunable surface terminations. Controlling voltage, electrolytes, temperature, and duration enables the optimal structural integrity. Nevertheless, existing scale

Leaftronics: Bio‐Fractal Scaffolds From Leaf Venation for Low‐Waste Electronics

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
“Leaftronics” transforms naturally evolved leaf venation into quasi‐fractal scaffolds for sustainable electronics. Polymer‐infiltrated leaf skeletons can be used to fabricate ultra‐smooth, reflow‐ and thin‐film‐compatible decomposable substrates, while making the same lignocellulose networks conducting results in flexible transparent electrodes.

Engineering of closed ecological system in space and inter-organismal interactions

open access: yesBiological Sciences in Space, 2003
Space agriculture is a concept of synthesis and operation of closed ecological system for controlling living environment and supplying materials in order to sustain life and to meet metabolic needs of space crew. It revitalizes metabolites and other excretion of crew for their recycled usage.

Mild cycles open closed communities to ecological restoration

open access: yes, 2020
Species loss is a global issue. With up to a million species at risk and insufficient protected area to maintain the world's biodiversity, humanity will increasingly need to rely on species re-introductions to locally restore diversity and function ...

The persistence of life measured by carbon cycling in closed ecological systems [PDF]

open access: yes, 1986
Materially closed energetically open ecological systems have been observed to support biological activity for over 10 years. It has been suggested that closed ecological systems (CES), as models of the earths biosphere, will support life indefinitely ...

Rational Tuning of Hygroscopic Oscillation of Stacked Nanoflake Assemblies for Continuous Ambient Energy Harvesting

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Stacked nanoflake assembly (SNA) membranes can oscillate autonomously, offering opportunities for soft actuation and energy harvesting. This work uncovers the physical mechanism behind the sustained oscillation of SNA membranes in gradient humidity and identifies three governing dimensionless parameters, enabling rational design for optimizing SNA ...
