Detailed kinship estimation for detecting bias among breeding families in a reintroduced population of the endangered bagrid catfish Tachysurus ichikawai

open access: yesPopulation Ecology, EarlyView.
In the process of captive breeding and reintroduction of endangered animal species, it is crucial to minimize familial bias in reproductive success during the reintroduction phase to preserve genetic diversity. In this study, we attempted to identify the familial lineage of individuals of the endangered bagrid fish Tachysurus ichikawai born at the ...

A Thermodynamic Theory of Ecology: Helmholtz Theorem for Lotka-Volterra Equation, Extended Conservation Law, and Stochastic Predator-Prey Dynamics [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the Royal Society A, vol. 471, 20150456 (2015), 2014
We carry out mathematical analyses, {\em \`{a} la} Helmholtz's and Boltzmann's 1884 studies of monocyclic Newtonian dynamics, for the Lotka-Volterra (LV) equation exhibiting predator-prey oscillations. In doing so a novel "thermodynamic theory" of ecology is introduced. An important feature, absent in the classical mechanics, of ecological systems is a

Optimal SNP filtering strategies for pedigree reconstruction: A case study with wild red‐spotted masu salmon population

open access: yesPopulation Ecology, EarlyView.
In this article, we tested optimal SNP filtering strategies for accurate parentage assignment and pedigree reconstruction for a wild population of red‐spotted masu salmon, Oncorhynchus masou ishikawae. We found that mid‐point filtering in terms of call rate and minor allele frequency performs well for pedigree reconstruction.

Media Ecology [PDF]

open access: yesIn Medias Res, 2015
Does the trend in which electronic media are gradually becoming extension of human body have to move towards full enslavement of a human and his personality, or the same human will unpredictably, with the aid of his personal media literacy, exit the ...

Evaluating the origin and spread of spotted lanternfly (Lycorma delicatula) in Japan

open access: yesPopulation Ecology, EarlyView.
The invasive spotted lanternfly (Lycorma delicatula) is native to China and is a serious economic pest in the Republic of Korea and the United States, though it is not considered a pest in Japan. We established a distribution map of L. delicatula in Japan through a comprehensive review of published literature and citizen science reports and analyzed ...

Outcomes of State- vs. Community-Based Mangrove Management in Southern Thailand

open access: yesEcology and Society, 2008
In Thailand, mangrove forests are claimed for state management, although it is widely recognized that coastal communities access and manage those forests.

Phylogenomic Insights into Diversity and Evolution of Nonpathogenic Xanthomonas Strains Associated with Citrus

open access: yesmSphere, 2020
Xanthomonas species are primarily known as a group of phytopathogens infecting diverse plants. Recent molecular studies reveal the existence of potential novel species and strains of Xanthomonas following a nonpathogenic lifestyle.

Complexity, Collective Effects and Modelling of Ecosystems: formation, function and stability

open access: yes, 1996
We discuss the relevance of studying ecology within the framework of Complexity Science from a statistical mechanics approach. Ecology is concerned with understanding how systems level properties emerge out of the multitude of interactions amongst large ...
