Deep learning image segmentation reveals patterns of UV reflectance evolution in passerine birds
Here, the authors develop software that uses photographs of birds to extract information on plumage UV reflectance. They use these data to show that UV reflectance is phylogenetically conserved and associated with the light environment.

Urbanization is altering landscapes globally at an unprecedented rate. While ecological differences between urban and rural environments often promote phenotypic divergence among populations, it is unclear to what degree these trait differences arise ...

EcoEvoApps: Interactive apps for theoretical models in ecology and evolutionary biology [PDF]
Abstract The integration of theory and data drives progress in science, but a persistent barrier to such integration in ecology and evolutionary biology is that theory is often developed and expressed in the form of mathematical models that can feel daunting and inaccessible for students and empiricists with variable quantitative ...

What we mean by species and whether they have any biological reality has been debated since the early days of evolutionary biology. Some biologists even suggest that plant species are created by taxonomists as a subjective, artificial division of nature.

While there is strong evidence that many mutualisms evolved from antagonism, how or why remains unclear. A study combining theory and a data-based model sheds light on how mutualisms evolve without extremely tight host fidelity and how ecological context

Chance promoter activities illuminate the origins of eukaryotic intergenic transcriptions
It is debated whether the pervasive intergenic transcription from eukaryotic genomes has functional significance. Here, Xu et al. find that only 1–5% of yeast intergenic transcription is unattributable to chance promoter activity or neighboring gene ...

Estimating pollination success with novel artificial flowers: Effects of nectar concentration
We developed novel artificial flowers that dispense and receive powdered food dyes as pollen analogues while their nectar is replenished by capillary action.

The meta-gut: community coalescence of animal gut and environmental microbiomes
All animals carry specialized microbiomes, and their gut microbiota are continuously released into the environment through excretion of waste. Here we propose the meta-gut as a novel conceptual framework that addresses the ability of the gut microbiome ...

Welcome to the big leaves: Best practices for improving genome annotation in non‐model plant genomes
Premise Robust standards to evaluate quality and completeness are lacking in eukaryotic structural genome annotation, as genome annotation software is developed using model organisms and typically lacks benchmarking to comprehensively evaluate the ...

Phylogenetic conservation of bacterial responses to soil nitrogen addition across continents
Developing a predictive understanding of bacterial community responses to environmental change is an ongoing challenge. Here, Isobe et al. reanalyze data on soil microbial responses to nitrogen addition across 5 continents, finding that responses are ...
