The Dis-Economics of Speed Limit

SSRN Electronic Journal, 2013
Speed limit is imposed for some purposes: oil saving and safety, for example. This paper proves that none is justified. Speed limit reduces road capacity, or equivalently stated more roads are needed for the same traffic flow. This paper shows how traffic economists have misunderstood the traffic flow curve, and that some even have mistook it as a ...

SPEED: A Semantics-Based Pipeline for Economic Event Detection

2010
Nowadays, emerging news on economic events such as acquisitions has a substantial impact on the financial markets. Therefore, it is important to be able to automatically and accurately identify events in news items in a timely manner. For this, one has to be able to process a large amount of heterogeneous sources of unstructured data in order to ...

Economics and Politics of High-Speed Rail

2012
The technological revolution linked to high speed rail (HSR) has been accompanied by myths and claims about its contribution to society and the economy. Although HSR is unquestionably a technological advance that has become a symbol of modernity, this review and analysis of the international experiences shows that the conditions necessary to have a ...

An economic comparison of a fixed speed, a two speed, and a variable speed vapour compression heat pump

Applied Energy, 1984
Abstract The seasonal performances, accounting for steady state conditions and on/off cycling losses, of a conventional fixed speed, a two speed, and a variable speed vapour compression heat pump have been determined for the annual heating demand of a large detached house.

Selected Economic Data, Accuracy vs. Reporting Speed

Journal of the American Statistical Association, 1968
In this article, the trade-off between accuracy and reporting speed is analyzed for three widely used monthly time series: retail sales, the book value of inventories in manufacturing and trade, and employees in nonagricultural establishments. The effect of early errors in these series on the preliminary and provisional GNP estimates is also examined ...

An economic theory of the distribution of traffic speeds

Journal of Urban Economics, 1984
Abstract A Cournot-Nash equilibrium model of the distribution of speeds in vehicular traffic is presented. The analysis reveals the possibilities of Pareto-optimal speed limit regulation, of gasoline as a Giffen, but not necessarily an inferior good, and of multiple traffic-flow maximums with respect to density.

Economic high-speed running of railways

Electronics and Power, 1975
Railway engineers have for some years been accelerating their understanding of those branches of engineering science applicable to the development of techniques leading to new equipment to meet changing market needs. Carrying passengers is more than half British Rail's total business, and this article describes the growth in technology devoted to ...

Light Economics In High-speed Photography

Optical Engineering, 1963
A figure of merit, called the Transfer Efficiency, may be calculated or measured for any camera based upon the exposure and the radiance of the subject required to produce a density of 1.0 on the film. The Transfer Efficiency of a camera serves to calibrate it so that the luminosity of events may be determined from measurements of film density. It also
