Turbulence and hypoxia contribute to dense biological scattering layers in a Patagonian fjord system [PDF]

open access: yesOcean Science, 2018
The aggregation of plankton species along fjords can be linked to physical properties and processes such as stratification, turbulence and oxygen concentration.

Environmental governance in the face of collapse: The case of Acapulco, Mexico, between tourist splendour and ecological risk

open access: yesEcological Solutions and Evidence, Volume 7, Issue 2, April/June 2026.
Underwater clean‐up efforts in Acapulco Bay reveal the visible consequences of chronic coastal pollution. This study shows how Environmental Risk Assessments (ERAs) can integrate scientific evidence, regulatory frameworks and practitioner experience to identify pollution sources and guide more effective coastal governance in cities of the Global South.

Predictions of southern migration timing in coastal sharks under future ocean warming

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 39, Issue 6, December 2025.
Abstract Projected redistribution of marine species due to ocean warming may undermine current conservation efforts. Yet, there have been few studies on how ocean warming may alter migration timing. Across 5 years of acoustic telemetry data (2018–2022), we determined environmental drivers of southward migration timing for 6 migratory shark species from

Almost Seven Decades of Coastal Bird Community Recovery Across Three European Seas

open access: yesGlobal Change Biology, Volume 31, Issue 11, November 2025.
Our study examined long‐term trends in coastal bird communities across three European seas from 1957 to 2024. We found that bird abundance and diversity have increased over time, although these improvements vary among regions and sites. Protected areas—particularly strictly protected ones—play an important role in supporting these recoveries, but ...

Tiny Patch, Big Value: A Small Dry Forest Patch Supports Wildlife Conservation in Guanacaste, Costa Rica

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 15, Issue 8, August 2025.
This study highlights the biodiversity value of the Murren Reserve, a small tropical dry forest patch in Guanacaste, Costa Rica. Using camera traps and opportunistic observations, researchers documented 32 wildlife species, including federally endangered species like the ocelot (Leopardus pardalis) and puma (Puma concolor), as well as 73 plant species.

Metabolic traits and thresholds to inform marine ecological conservation and restoration

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 62, Issue 6, Page 1350-1363, June 2025.
Integrating organismal responses to environmental stressors into monitoring protocols can provide early warning indicators of ecosystem health. This approach strengthens conservation and restoration initiatives, supporting policy decisions in the face of increasing coastal development and climate change.
