Candida spp. in Cetaceans: Neglected Emerging Challenges in Marine Ecosystems

open access: yesMicroorganisms
Cetaceans, which are crucial in marine ecosystems, act as sentinels for ecosystem and human–environmental health. However, emerging fungal infections, particularly by Candida spp., pose a growing concern in these marine mammals.

Indicators of Coastal Wetlands Restoration Success: A Systematic Review

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2020
Coastal wetlands restoration is an emerging field which aims to recover the ecological characteristics of degraded ecosystems to natural ones. The recent UN declaration of 2021–2030 as the “Decade on Ecosystem Restoration” will hopefully encourage global

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Epigenetic blind spots – the role of DNA methylation dynamics in stem cell‐based models of embryogenesis

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Embryo‐like structures (stembryos) are an innovative tool, but they are hindered by experimental variability and limited developmental potential. DNA methylation is crucial for mammalian development, but its status in stembryo models is poorly characterized.

The human gut microbiome across the life course

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Despite significant individual variation and continuous change throughout life, the human gut microbiome follows some life stage‐specific trends. This article provides a brief overview of how gut microbiome composition shifts across different phases of life. Created in BioRender. Özkurt, E. (2026) https://BioRender.com/8q4nrnc.

Comparing Apples to Oranges: Common Trends and Thresholds in Anthropogenic and Environmental Pressures across Multiple Marine Ecosystems

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2017
Ecosystem-based management (EBM) in marine ecosystems considers impacts caused by complex interactions between environmental and anthropogenic pressures (i.e., oceanographic, climatic, socio-economic) and marine communities.

Seabirds as indicators of marine ecosystems [PDF]

open access: yesMarine Ecology Progress Series, 2007
Breeding performance of seabirds reflects conditions in the marine environment, and seabirds are often considered suitable indicators because they are sensitive to variations in food supply and relatively easy to observe. However, any individual parameter (e.g.

An unexpected alternative viologen electron mediator site in tungsten‐containing formate dehydrogenase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
An unexpected alternative interaction site for ethyl viologen was identified in formate dehydrogenase 1 from Methylorubrum extorquens. Combined mutagenesis, kinetic analysis, and docking revealed that aromatic residues near an iron–sulfur cluster enable flavin mononucleotide‐independent electron transfer, offering a framework for engineering improved ...

From maps to mandates: Multitemporal vegetation cover analysis as a tool to evaluate environmental judicial decisions

open access: yesPeople and Nature
This study examines the use of multitemporal vegetation cover analysis as a tool to assess the ecological effectiveness of judicial decisions that recognize the rights of nature, using Colombia's 2016 T‐622 decision on the Atrato River as a case study ...

Les indicateurs de biodiversité marine et côtière : état des lieux institutionnel

open access: yesVertigO, 2010
2010 is the year of biodiversity. Since the 90’s, many biodiversity indicators have been developed to monitor biodiversity trends. This paper proposes a review of the marine biodiversity indicators which are included into international and regional ...
