Trade‐offs across life history stages and social association types shape winter communal roosting in a long‐lived raptor

open access: yesJournal of Animal Ecology, EarlyView.
Our study demonstrates how life history trade‐offs and pair bonds influence winter roosting in red kites. Analysing long‐term GPS data from 216 individuals, we reveal marked behavioural plasticity in communal roosting: young, non‐breeding males are most likely to join communal roosts, whereas breeding pairs predominantly roost together near their ...

Vascular flora of Konün Wenu Hill (La Araucanía, Chile): composition and ecological relevance of a forest fragment in a rural–urban matrix

open access: yesMediterranean Botany
Konün Wenu Hill (38°46′ S, 72°38′ W) is a prominent insular hill of considerable historical and cultural significance, located in the Mediterranean–temperate transition of south-central Chile. It hosts a ca.

Effects of Changing Vegetation Composition on Community Structure, Ecosystem Functioning, and Predator–Prey Interactions at the Saltmarsh-Mangrove Ecotone

open access: yesDiversity, 2019
Decreasing frequency of freeze events due to climate change is enabling the poleward range expansion of mangroves. As these tropical trees expand poleward, they are replacing herbaceous saltmarsh vegetation.

Ecophysiology of an Avian Invader: Body Condition and Metabolic Rate Adjustments to Ambient Temperature

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
This study examines the ecophysiological responses of common waxbills to temperature variation in Portugal. We measured body condition and basal metabolic rate (BMR) during summer and winter across two regions in Portugal. Body condition was negatively correlated with temperature, while the relationship between BMR and temperature varied seasonally. In

Avaliação dos métodos de amostragem para fauna perifítica em macrófitas na Reserva da Biosfera, Serra do Espinhaço, Estado de Minas Gerais, Brasil - DOI: 10.4025/actascibiolsci.v30i3.377

open access: yesActa Scientiarum: Biological Sciences, 2008

Starving or Stuffing? Plasticity in Wild Boar Body Mass Variations During Summer in a Mediterranean Area

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
Assessing drivers of population dynamics helps to mitigate human–wildlife conflicts. In Mediterranean areas, summer aridity reduces resources, potentially affecting ungulates' body condition and reproduction. In a mixed forested‐rural area, wild boar female body mass increased throughout summer in rainy‐mild years and decreased in hot‐dry years.

Biotic and abiotic drivers of tree seedling recruitment across an alpine treeline ecotone

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2018
Treeline responses to climate change ultimately depend on successful seedling recruitment, which requires dispersal of viable seeds and establishment of individual propagules in novel environments.
