Ecotones – where biomes meet [PDF]
news and update ISSN 1948-6596 commentary Ecotones – where biomes meet The classification of biomes (or vegetation types) represents one of the most basic summaries of ecological units and provides part of the basis of biogeography. The first systematic continen- tal biome map was a map of Africa produced by Schantz in 1923 (Kuchler 1960).

Translocations are often used in the conservation of large raptors, including Old World vultures. Different release methods are usually assessed by comparing the movement patterns and survival of released individuals. However, these approaches fail to capture the gregarious behaviour of many vulture species.

Mangroves and salt marshes are globally recognized for their ability to efficiently sequester and store carbon in biomass and soil carbon pools. An increase in soil carbon has been found at range limits where mangroves are expanding along ecotones into ...

Well‐preserved heathlands of NW Italy are the main overwintering habitat of Sympecma paedisca, while grassy margins in farmland are used only in summer and are avoided from autumn onwards. Grassy margins in farmland act as corridors during the species' migrations between its breeding (ricefields) and overwintering (lowland heathlands) grounds ...

Offspring sex ratio of introduced red deer in Patagonia, Argentina after an intensive drought [PDF]
Red deer (Cervus elaphus) introduced to Patagonia have reached high densities in the forest-steppe ecotone. Drought conditions during 1998/99 were suspected to impact subsequent reproductive performance.

A protracted phenology: Post‐diapause larval development of a threatened butterfly
Larval survival during diapause was high; hibernaculum webs were mostly located near Succisa pratensis plants, which often retained vital leaves through winter. Post‐diapause developmental time varied strongly depending on exposure to different microclimates, being reduced by litter cover, solar radiation and a higher heat load index.
