Temporal polyethism, life expectancy, and entropy of workers of the ant Ectatomma vizottoi Almeida, 1987 (Formicidae: Ectatomminae) [PDF]

open access: yesacta ethologica, 2010
We investigated the changes in the behavioral repertoire over the course of life and determined the life expectancy and entropy of workers of the ant Ectatomma vizottoi. Newly emerged ants were individually marked with model airplane paint for observation of behaviors and determination of the age and life expectancy.

Formigas urbanas da cidade de Xanxerê, Santa Catarina, Brasil

open access: yesBiotemas, 2009

Description of the Immature and Adult Stages of Ectatomma vizottoi (Formicidae: Ectatomminae)

open access: yes, 2009
We estimated the number of larval instars of the ant Ectatomma vizottoi (Ectatomminae), by measuring the maximum width of the head capsules of 208 larvae and the morphology of the immature stages (eggs, larvae and pupae) and adults.

The predatory behavior of ants: an impressive panoply of morphological adaptations

open access: yesInsect Science, EarlyView.
This review focuses on predation in ants, showing the wide diversity of cases from solitary foraging to group hunting tactics, as well as the evolution of mandible shape frequently adapted to capture specific prey. Although most ants are generalist feeders, finding their sugary substances directly on plants or indirectly via sap‐sucking insects, some ...

Hunting Ants (Ectatomminae Y Ponerinae) in Dry Forest Fragments and Their Matrix (Tolima, Colombia)

open access: yesRevista Colombiana de Entomología, 2012
The richness, abundance and composition of hunting ants in three fragments of tropical dry forests in the northern region of Tolima, Colombia and their matrices were assessed; in addition, three scrub patches of shrub were included due to their high frequency in the landscape.

A Machine Learning Approach to Identify Ant Species from the Genus Ectatomma Smith, 1858 (Hymenoptera: Formicidae)

open access: yesSociobiology
There are some gaps in the taxonomy of certain ant species, making their identification and study more challenging. Regarding some genera, it is an extensive, detailed, and laborious process.

Impacts of land use change on diaspore‐dispersing ant assemblages in southwestern Amazonia

open access: yesInsect Conservation and Diversity, EarlyView.
Land use changes shift ant assemblages, more intensive land uses are dominated by generalist and open habitat specialist species engaging in group foraging. The diaspore removal rates cannot differ, but the quality of dispersal was lower in disturbed habitats.

Description of the immature and adult stages of Ectatomma vizottoi (Formicidae: Ectatomminae)

open access: yes, 2022
We estimated the number of larval instars of the ant Ectatomma vizottoi (Ectatomminae), by measuring the maximum width of the head capsules of 208 larvae and the morphology of the immature stages (eggs, larvae and pupae) and adults. There are three larval instars during the post-embryonic development. The reproductive eggs are dark brown.

The role of habitat simplification and seasonality in shaping interactions between ants, plants and herbivores in a neotropical savanna

open access: yesEcological Entomology, Volume 51, Issue 2, Page 381-394, April 2026.
We evaluated how chronic anthropogenic disturbances (CAD) and seasonal variation influence interactions between ants and plants with extrafloral nectaries (EFN's), with emphasis on the responses of ants, herbivores, and plants. Ant and herbivore diversity remained stable across seasons in the preserved cerrado, whereas the pasture had higher ant ...
