Epidemiology of Avian Ectoparasitic Infestations Diagnosed in Osun State Veterinary Hospitals, Southwest Nigeria

open access: yesNotulae Scientia Biologicae, 2018
Ectoparasitism is the most devastating parasitic condition of poultry after coccidiosis. This study was conducted to identify the risk factors associated with avian ectoparasitism in Osun State, Nigeria.

Amended diagnosis, mitochondrial genome, and phylogenetic position of Sphyranura euryceae (Neodermata, Monogenea, Polystomatidae), a parasite of the Oklahoma salamander

open access: yesParasite, 2023
Polystomatidae is a monogenean family whose representatives infect mainly (semi)-aquatic tetrapods. Species of Sphyranura Wright, 1879 exhibit ectoparasitism on salamander hosts, with molecular work supporting their inclusion within Polystomatidae, at an

Predation vs. Parasitism: A Case Study of Indigenous Co‐Stewardship and Science Co‐Production to Measure Temporal Shifts in Moose Mortality on Ancestral Lands of the Grand Portage Ojibwe

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 1, January 2026.
This study, led by the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, tracks survival and examines causes of adult moose mortality from 2010 to 2022 on the Grand Portage Indian Reservation and in Voyageurs National Park. Using a Bayesian framework, we integrated multiple contributing factors to accurately estimate cause‐specific mortality probabilities ...

Host-parasite interactions between the piranha Pygocentrus nattereri (Characiformes: Characidae) and isopods and branchiurans (Crustacea) in the rio Araguaia basin, Brazil

open access: yesNeotropical Ichthyology
In the tropics, studies on the ecology of host-parasite interactions are incipient and generally related to taxonomic aspects. The main objective of the present work was to analyze ecological aspects and identify the metazoan fauna of ectoparasites that ...

Temperature‐dependent interspecific interference alters pygmy backswimmer predation on water fleas

open access: yesEcological Entomology, Volume 50, Issue 5, Page 948-951, October 2025.
Increasing densities of water mites alter the predation behaviour of pygmy backswimmer, particularly in higher temperatures. Pygmy backswimmer displayed type II functional response across all the treatments. In the absence of water mites, the functional response was higher at 25°C than at 16°C, indicated by a higher space clearance rate.

Superinfection Exclusion in Neotropical Honey Bees May Block DWV‐B, an Emerging Infectious Disease Variant of Deformed Wing Virus

open access: yesEvolutionary Applications, Volume 18, Issue 8, August 2025.
ABSTRACT RNA viruses often comprise multiple variants that co‐circulate in a host population, with potentially complex dynamics. Deformed wing virus (DWV), arguably the most impactful virus of honey bees (Apis mellifera), nowadays exists as two major variants, genotypes A (DWV‐A) and B (DWV‐B), which provide an amenable window into the dynamics of ...
