This paper describes theoretical and experimental work directed toward finding the optimum probe dimensions and operating frequency for eddy current detection of half-penny surface cracks in nonmagnetic conducting materials. The study applies to probes which excite an approximately uniform spatial field over the length of the crack at the surface of ...

Eddy-Current Reflection Probes: Theory and Experiment
Research in Nondestructive Evaluation, 1989A general ΔZ theory of reflection-type eddy-current probes was recently developed for new types of robotic proximity sensors. In this paper, the theory is applied to the characterization of surface-connected flaws. Flaw signals were calculated using a finite-difference implementation of the ΔZ theory developed at Stanford University. A special air-core

Eddy current probe performance requirements
NDT International, 1990Abstract : This study resulted in the development of a procurement specification for single-coil, absolute eddy current probes (shielded and nonshielded) which are used by the USAF with the Hocking UH-B (or equivalent) instruments for inspection of aluminum airframe structures.

Eddy current probe patterned in YBCO
IEEE Transactions on Appiled Superconductivity, 2001Superconductive quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) coupled to arrays of small pickup loops can give images of millimeter fatigue cracks deep inside structures, using eddy currents. Coupling magnetic flux from a pickup loop to a SQUID commonly leads to a thousand fold loss.

Eddy Current Probe Identification and Analysis
IEEE Transactions on Instrumentation and Measurement, 2017This paper presents a new approach to the classical method for failure detection with eddy currents. In contrast to traditional methods of measuring reflected impedance on the probe circuit, this paper uses concepts of identification theory to find a transfer function that characterizes the dynamics of the measuring system by eddy currents.

Deep Penetrating Eddy Currents and Probes
Materials Testing, 2007Abstract The eddy current skin-effect limits the detection of subsurface defects and the range of thickness measurement. Traditional concepts to estimate the penetration depth basing on plane wave propagation into a conducting halfspace cannot describe the real depth of inspection achievable by state-of-the-art sensors and instruments ...

Mapping of Eddy Current Probe Fields
1986An experimental determination of eddy current probe fields can be useful in several areas of nondestructive evaluation (NDE). In a very practical sense, a field map or profile is a good tool for examining the variations in probe performance. We show that probes of nominally identical construction can produce very different magnetic fields.

RF shielding and eddy currents in NMR probes
Journal of Magnetic Resonance, 2019Shielding of the NMR sample by a thin coating of metal between the sample and the rf coil arises in some geometries. The shielding may be used for rf heating of the sample tube or for a high infrared reflectivity coating in cryoprobe applications. An important application is for a shield that prevents noise from entering the rf probe circuit while ...
