Seasonal Variability of Eddy Kinetic Energy along the Kuroshio Current

Journal of Physical Oceanography, 2023
Abstract The seasonal variability of the eddy kinetic energy (EKE) along the Kuroshio Current (KC) is examined using outputs from an eddy-resolving (1/10°) ocean model. Using a theoretical framework for climatological monthly mean EKE, the mechanisms governing the seasonal cycle of upper-ocean EKE are investigated.

Variations of eddy kinetic energy in the South China Sea

Journal of Oceanography, 2010
Fifteen years of merged altimetric data were used to acquire the seasonal to interanual variations of eddy kinetic energy (EKE) in the South China Sea (SCS). The results show that climatological mean EKE in the SCS ranges from 50 cm(2)/s(2) to 1,400 cm(2)/s(2), with high values in the regions southeast of Vietnam and southwest of Taiwan Island.

Seasonal variability of eddy kinetic energy in southeastern Arabian Sea

2022
<p>Eddy kinetic energy (EKE) is a measure of temporal and spatial variability of ocean mesoscale eddies . This study elucidates the key factors that determine the spatial distribution and seasonality of mesoscale eddies of the south-eastern Arabian sea (SEAS) using satellite observational data from Copernicus Marine service data centre ...

Eddy kinetic energy in the deep western North Atlantic

Journal of Geophysical Research, 1976
Long-term moored current meter data are used to demonstrate the existence of 2 orders of magnitude of variation for the kinetic energy per unit mass associated with low-frequency fluctuations in the western North Atlantic Ocean at depths near 4000 m.

Origins of Eddy Kinetic Energy in the Bay of Bengal

Journal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, 2018
AbstractBy analyzing satellite observational data and ocean general circulation model experiments, this study investigates the key processes that determine the spatial distribution and seasonality of intraseasonal eddy kinetic energy (EKE) within the Bay of Bengal (BOB).

Understanding Regional Trends in Southern Ocean Eddy Kinetic Energy

2019
According to the eddy-saturation theory, changing winds in the Southern Ocean will primarily increase turbulence and not overall transport. Many studies using high-resolution models have demonstrated this, but observational evidence is limited. One study recent by Hogg et al.

Interannual Variation of Eddy Kinetic Energy from TOPEX Altimeter Observations

Marine Geodesy, 1999
Monthly mesoscale eddy kinetic energy (EKE) per unit mass has been computed for four years, 1993-1996, from TOPEX altimeter data in the Indian Ocean. It ranges from 50 cm2/s2 to 2,700 cm2/s2 (about 4,000 cm2/s2 near the Somali region in a few months).

Eddy kinetic energy in the North Atlantic from surface drifters

Journal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, 1983
One hundred ten satellite‐tracked freely drifting buoys measured velocities and trajectories of the near‐surface currents in the North Atlantic. Mean velocity values and the velocity variance about the mean were calculated for different regions. A horizontal map of eddy kinetic energy was prepared on a 2°×2° grid between latitudes 20° and 55°N. Maximum

Abyssal Eddy Kinetic Energy Levels in the Western North Pacific

Journal of Physical Oceanography, 1984
Abstract An earlier observation of about 50 cm2 s−2 for the maximum abyssal (∼4000 m depth) eddy kinetic energy (KE) in the western North Pacific along 152°E, occurring in the vicinity of the Kuroshio Extension, is now supported by nearly two years of observation with moored instruments deployed from 28 to 41°N.
