Regional Trends in Southern Ocean Eddy Kinetic Energy

Journal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, 2021
AbstractPrevious model‐based studies and observation‐based studies suggest that increasing wind energy input into the Southern Ocean will primarily cause increases in eddy kinetic energy (EKE) with no significant change in the mean circulation, a result that has been named the “eddy‐saturation” hypothesis.

On the Decadal Variability of the Eddy Kinetic Energy in the Kuroshio Extension

open access: yesJournal of Physical Oceanography, 2017
AbstractPrevious studies have found that the decadal variability of eddy kinetic energy (EKE) in the upstream Kuroshio Extension is negatively correlated with the jet strength, which seems counterintuitive at first glance because linear stability analysis usually suggests that a stronger jet would favor baroclinic instability and thus lead to stronger ...

Atmospheric Moisture Decreases Midlatitude Eddy Kinetic Energy

Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences, 2023
Abstract There is compelling evidence that atmospheric moisture may either increase or decrease midlatitude eddy kinetic energy (EKE). We reconcile these findings by using a hierarchy of idealized atmospheric models to demonstrate that moisture energizes individual eddies given fixed large-scale background winds and temperatures but makes those ...

Abyssal eddy kinetic energy in the North Atlantic

open access: yesJournal of Marine Research, 1984
Both eddy and mean fields have similar zonal and meridional scales of geographical variation in the mid-latitude North Atlantic. The first map of the North Atlantic that contained estimates of the intensity of the abyssal eddy field is now several years ...

On the Errors of Estimating Oceanic Eddy Kinetic Energy

Journal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, 2021
AbstractWhen evaluating the kinetic energy of the eddy field, using a flow‐decomposition method to split the eddies from the mean‐flow is often necessary. However, the kinetic energies of the eddy and mean‐flow may not sum up to the total energy, because of the existence of a third term, the residual kinetic energy (RKE).

Interannual modulation of subthermocline eddy kinetic energy east of the Philippines

Journal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, 2022
Abstract Interannual variation of subthermocline eddy kinetic energy (EKE) east of the Philippines is investigated based on mooring measurements during 2015–2019 and ocean‐state estimates during 1995–2017 from the Oceanic General Circulation Model for the Earth Simulator (OFES). Prominent interannual variation of EKE is detected below

Seasonality of eddy kinetic energy in an eddy permitting global climate model

Ocean Modelling, 2017
Abstract We examine the seasonal cycle of upper-ocean mesoscale turbulence in a high resolution CESM climate simulation. The ocean model component (POP) has 0.1° resolution, mesoscale resolving at low and middle latitudes. Seasonally and regionally resolved wavenumber power spectra are calculated for sea-surface eddy kinetic energy (EKE).

On the seasonal variability of eddy kinetic energy in the Gulf Stream region

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2008
In the Gulf Stream region, eddy kinetic energy (EKE) peaks in summer while, as measured by the baroclinic eddy growth time scale, the ocean is most baroclinically unstable in late winter.
