This article starts with a concise synopsis of the history of edema. The role of underfilling, overflow, antidiuretic hormone, and acquaporins is subsequently discussed. Emphasis is given to the use of diuretics in edematous patients. The role and risks of albumin infusion are illustrated. The new hypothesis of pulse reverse osmosis is discussed.

In a 22 year old woman extensive edema developed during evaluation for amenorrhea. It was learned then that she was consuming escessive amounts of a laxative daily. Balance studies were performed which demonstrated that she excreted large amounts of sodium in her liquid stools while taking the dose of laxative she had been using.

Reinke's edema (RE) is the polypoid degeneration of one or both vocal folds within Reinke's space. The viscoelastic properties of the mucosal folds are characteristically altered by the expansion of the subepithelial space. Most frequently, patients present with dysphonia, with women being more affected than men. The primary risk factor is tobacco use.
