Seminars in Nephrology, 2001
This article starts with a concise synopsis of the history of edema. The role of underfilling, overflow, antidiuretic hormone, and acquaporins is subsequently discussed. Emphasis is given to the use of diuretics in edematous patients. The role and risks of albumin infusion are illustrated. The new hypothesis of pulse reverse osmosis is discussed.

Macular Edema and Cystoid Macular Edema
American Journal of Ophthalmology, 1981We examined the foveomacular regions from three eyes in which fluorescein angiography had demonstrated the characteristic appearance of cystoid macular edema by light and electron microscopy. Cystoid macular edema was present in two eyes (one of which was from a 63-year-old diabetic man) that contained peripheral choroidal melanomas, and in a third eye

Infectious and inflammatory conditions of the head and neck may present with impaired airways. An understanding of the pathophysiology will allow for accurate diagnosis and prompt intervention. Preintervention discussion and planning by members of the airway team are crucial in developing a primary and backup plans for safely securing the airway.

In a 22 year old woman extensive edema developed during evaluation for amenorrhea. It was learned then that she was consuming escessive amounts of a laxative daily. Balance studies were performed which demonstrated that she excreted large amounts of sodium in her liquid stools while taking the dose of laxative she had been using.

Physical Therapy, 1982
To the Editor: I was very pleased to see the case report, “Intermittent Compression for the Treament of a Chronic Stasis Ulceration,” in Physical Therapy (October 1981). During the years that I worked in a hospital-based practice, I successfully used the intermittent compression pump method of treatment—essentially as outlined in the article—in ...

Macular edema is the final common pathway of many intraocular and systemic insults. It may develop in a diffuse pattern where the macula appears generally thickened or it may acquire the characteristic petaloid appearance referred to as cystoid macular edema.

Hypernatremia is usually associated with water depletion. Seven very ill patients developed hypernatremia in association with marked edema during therapy in the hospital. All patients had hypoalbuminemia and azotemia. At the time of hypernatremia, urine output averaged 1880 mL/24 h and urine sodium concentration averaged 59 mmol/L, suggesting that low ...

Reinke's edema (RE) is the polypoid degeneration of one or both vocal folds within Reinke's space. The viscoelastic properties of the mucosal folds are characteristically altered by the expansion of the subepithelial space. Most frequently, patients present with dysphonia, with women being more affected than men. The primary risk factor is tobacco use.

Edema and Edema-Forming States
1983Edema occurs when the volume of fluid in the tissue space is increased from normal. It may be the consequence of numerous diseases which can affect the kidneys, the cardiovascular system, the liver, or the endocrine system, or it may result from the administration of certain drugs or a variety of other disorders (Table I).

EDEMA and hyponatremia represent deviations of two characteristics of the internal environment that are usually maintained within narrow limits. These abnormalities involve alterations in physiologic equilibria which may be better understood if their analysis is prefaced by a consideration of the normal regulatory processes involved in the metabolism ...
