Macular edema is the final common pathway of many intraocular and systemic insults. It may develop in a diffuse pattern where the macula appears generally thickened or it may acquire the characteristic petaloid appearance referred to as cystoid macular edema.

Reinke's edema (RE) is the polypoid degeneration of one or both vocal folds within Reinke's space. The viscoelastic properties of the mucosal folds are characteristically altered by the expansion of the subepithelial space. Most frequently, patients present with dysphonia, with women being more affected than men. The primary risk factor is tobacco use.

Edema and Edema-Forming States
1983Edema occurs when the volume of fluid in the tissue space is increased from normal. It may be the consequence of numerous diseases which can affect the kidneys, the cardiovascular system, the liver, or the endocrine system, or it may result from the administration of certain drugs or a variety of other disorders (Table I).

Great strides have been made in understanding the pathogenesis of cerebral edema. Treatment is usually successful, particularly with the newer modes of management (mannitol, steroids, hyperventilation); however, cerebral edema is occasionally resistant to all modes of therapy.

This article provides the reader with practical information to be applied to the various remaining causes of macular edema. Some macular edemas linked to ocular diseases like radiotherapy after ocular melanomas remained of poor functional prognosis due to the primary disease.

EDEMA and hyponatremia represent deviations of two characteristics of the internal environment that are usually maintained within narrow limits. These abnormalities involve alterations in physiologic equilibria which may be better understood if their analysis is prefaced by a consideration of the normal regulatory processes involved in the metabolism ...

Tracheal mucosal edema in hydrostatic pulmonary edema
Journal of Applied Physiology, 1994Airway edema has been described in heart failure, and, in animal experiments, airway narrowing was observed with elevated left atrial pressure (Pla). On the basis of double-indicator-dilution principles using helium and dimethylether, we were able to measure a water compartment of the tracheal mucosa (VH2O) in dogs.

Diabetic macular edema (DME), defined as a retinal thickening involving or approaching the center of the macula, represents the most common cause of vision loss in patients affected by diabetes mellitus. In the last few years, many diagnostic tools have proven to be useful in the detection and the monitoring of the features characterizing DME.
