Reproduction of Edema Disease of Swine with Purified Shiga-like Toxin-II Variant

open access: closedVeterinary Pathology, 1991
Twenty-one weaned Yorkshire-Landrace pigs were injected intravenously with graded doses of purified Shiga-like toxin-II variant (edema disease toxin). In a preliminary study, three pigs (Nos. 1, 2, 3) were injected with 48, 24, and 12 ng, respectively, of SLT-IIv/kg of body weight. Subsequently, three groups (Nos.

Experimental data on the pathogenesis of edema disease of swine. Clinical picture, gross and microscopic lesions related to endotoxin shock.

open access: closedZentralblatt für Veterinärmedizin Reihe B, 2010
Summary Iranian strains of foot-and-mouth disease virus of Types A, O, and SAT 1 were attenuated for cattle by serial passage in different kinds of cells of hamster, cattle and sheep origin. Fully attenuated strains immunized cattle poorly and elicited a poor antibody response.

Treatment of edema disease of swine.

open access: closedCanadian journal of comparative medicine : Revue canadienne de medecine comparee, 1970
Antihistamine (Allermin) was used sucessfully in the treatment of naturally occurring edema disease of swine under the field and laboratory conditions. A high recovery rate (88.8%) was obtained in the group of pigs with mild clinical signs. The intravenous route of Allermin administration had definite beneficial value.

Neonatal Escherichia coli infection and segmental arterial necrosis: similarity to edema disease of weanling swine.

open access: closedModern pathology : an official journal of the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology, Inc, 1995
A 32-wk gestation female patient had Escherichia coli pneumonia, hyaline membranes, and pulmonary hemorrhage and died 20 h after birth. E. coli was cultured from the placenta and from both lungs at autopsy. In the lungs and other organs, bland segmental necrosis of the wall of small arteries and arterioles was observed.

Experimental edema disease of swine (E. coli enterotoxemia). II. The development of hypertension after the intravenous administration of edema disease principle.

open access: closedCanadian journal of comparative medicine : Revue canadienne de medecine comparee, 1974
The intravenous inoculation of edema disease principle induced profound hypertension in pigs. The increase in blood pressure occurred approximately 40 hours after inoculation and coincided with the development of the characteristic neurological disturbance of edema disease.

An attempt to experimentally produce edema disease in swine by oral administration of escherichia coli serotype O139:K82:H1.

open access: closedCanadian journal of comparative medicine : Revue canadienne de medecine comparee, 1969
Diarrhea, reduced appetite, and nervousness were observed following oral exposure of six pigs to freeze-thaw extract and living culture of E. coli strain 0139:K82:H1. The most significance gross change was the appearance of subserosal edema of the mesentry, especially of the mesocolon.
