The Edge Effect

Advances in Skin & Wound Care, 2007
PURPOSETo provide practitioners with information about advanced treatment options related to the edge effect of chronic wounds.TARGET AUDIENCEThis continuing education activity is intended for physicians and nurses with an interest in wound care.OBJECTIVESAfter reading the article and taking the ...

Edge Effects

CHI '00 extended abstracts on Human factors in computer systems - CHI '00, 2000
In biology they describe as 'the edge effect' the tendency for a greater variety and density of organisms to cluster in the boundaries between communities. As in nature, so too in a networked economy: variety, density and interaction are success factors.

Cost-Effective Edge Server Placement in Edge Computing

Proceedings of the 2019 5th International Conference on Systems, Control and Communications, 2019
In a smart city powered by the 5G network, a large amount of data never seen before will be generated. The conventional cloud computing paradigm cannot fulfil users' needs, especially for low latency. The new edge computing paradigm is emerging to mitigate the this problem.

A neutral model of edge effects

Theoretical Population Biology, 2009
In this paper a spatially implicit neutral model for explaining the edge effects between habitats is proposed. To analyze this model we use two different approaches: a discrete approach that is based on the Master equation for a one step jump process and a continuous approach based on the approximation of the discrete jump process with the Kolmogorov ...

Luminance gradients and edge effects

Vision Research, 1976
Abstract Cornsweet (1970) summarized the evidence that the brightness sensation is not only related to luminance. He showed that apparently contradictory brightness sensations occur in the case of a specific light distribution near an edge. The same effect also occurs in the case of sawtooth light distributions.

Mechanics of edge effects on frictionlesscontacts

International Journal of Solids and Structures, 1995
This paper investigates edge phenomena by considering elastic contact near the edge of a wedge with varying wedge angle. Previous two-dimensional analysis is first reviewed and discussed to develop an understanding of the mechanics when edges are in contact. Three-dimensional wedge contact is then considered. The integral equation for rigid indentation

On edge effects in rheometry

Journal of Fluid Mechanics, 1970
Consideration is given to the influence of edge effects on rheological measurements. To facilitate this, we discuss theoretically the flow generated by the slow steady rotation of a solid of revolution in an elastico-viscous liquid confined by convenient bath surfaces. The relevant linear partial differential equations are solved numerically.

Edge effects in composites

International Applied Mechanics, 1995
In the present article we survey papers on edge effects investigated by the rigorous approach. We interpret edge effects as stressed states created in a composite as a result of zones in which the stresses exhibit a rapidly changing behavior in comparison with the slow variation of the stresses outside such zones.

The edge effect in nanoindentation

Philosophical Magazine, 2011
Until recently, obtaining unambiguous data from a nanoindentation measurement placed near a free edge has not been possible because the discontinuity associated with the edge introduces artifacts into the measurement. The primary consequence of a free edge is to introduce a structural compliance, C s, into the measurement.

Edge Effects in Pressurized Membranes

Journal of Engineering Mechanics, 2002
Developing membrane structures for space-based applications is an effort to reduce launch mass and stowed volume. Accurate modeling of the shape after deployment is very important to the high-precision inflatable structures for space applications.
