Edge-localized modes - physics and theory
Plasma Physics and Controlled Fusion, 1998The phenomenology of ELMs is reviewed, emphasizing the conditions for their occurrence, their repetition frequencies, their impact on confinement and the properties of associated fluctuations, in order to understand the physics involved. Theories of ELMs are then briefly described and the extent to which they can successfully model ELMs is discussed.

Nonlinear magnetohydrodynamics of edge localized mode precursors
Physics of Plasmas, 2015A possible origin of edge-localized-mode (ELM) precursors based on nonlinear ideal peeling-ballooning mode is reported. Via nonlinear variational principle, a nonlinear evolution equation of the radial displacement is derived and solved, analytically.

2014
The next generation of fusion machines like ITER and DEMO will need a reliable method for controlling the periodic transient expulsion of a considerable amount of energy onto the plasma-facing components caused by instabilities at the plasma edge. The good plasma confinement in these tokamak devices will result in a steepened pressure profile at the ...

Characteristics of edge localized modes in ASDEX Upgrade
Plasma Physics and Controlled Fusion, 1996Characteristics of the various types of edge localized modes (ELMs) observed during the H-mode of the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak are presented. Magnetic high-mode-number ELM precursor activity is found for type I ELMs and type III ELMs, the former only during neutral beam injection in the counter direction.

Edge-localized mode simulations in divertor tokamaks
Physics of Plasmas, 1996The three-dimensional nonlinear evolution of moderate wavelength pressure-driven edge-localized instabilities is calculated in divertor tokamaks. The evolution consists of several stages: linear growth, nonlinear saturation and turbulence, shear flow generation, pressure outflow to the outboard divertor, and finally, outflow to the inboard divertor ...

Density edge localized modes in rotating plasmas
Nuclear Fusion, 1996A linear analysis is presented for the density edge localized mode with realistic tokamak edge plasma and electric field profiles. The mode is driven unstable by the electron temperature gradient and is localized by the density pedestal, with a radial mode width proportional to the square root of the density scale length (in H mode).

Magnetic X-points, edge localized modes, and stochasticity
Physics of Plasmas, 2010Edge localized modes (ELMs) near the boundary of a high temperature, magnetically confined toroidal plasma represent a new type of nonlinear magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) plasma instability that grows through a coherent plasma interaction with part of a chaotic magnetic field.

Effect of resistivity on small edge localized mode
Physics of Plasmas, 2018The effect of resistivity on small edge localized mode (ELM) is investigated based on the peeling-ballooning three-field module of BOUT++. The ELM size increases with increasing resistivity, which is attributed to both linear growth rate and turbulence intensity.

Edge localized modes control by resonant magnetic perturbations
Journal of Nuclear Materials, 2007A number of designs for external or in-vessel coils generating Resonant Magnetic Perturbations (RMPs) for type I ELMs control in ITER are analyzed. The RMPs generated by the I-coils in the successful DIII-D ELMs control experiments are taken as a reference. The three ITER characteristic scenarios (H-mode, hybrid and steady-state) are studied.

The physics of large and small edge localized modes
Plasma Physics and Controlled Fusion, 2000The operational boundaries for the occurrence of various types of edge localized mode (ELM) instability in high-confinement-mode (H-mode) fusion plasmas are reviewed. The phenomenology of ELMs and the occurrence of different ELM types in parameter space are described.
