Discrete surface solitons in two dimensions [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
We investigate fundamental localized modes in 2D lattices with an edge (surface). Interaction with the edge expands the stability area for ordinary solitons, and induces a difference between perpendicular and parallel dipoles; on the contrary, lattice ...

Effect of electromechanical coupling on locally resonant quasiperiodic metamaterials

open access: yesAIP Advances, 2023
Electromechanical metamaterials have been the focus of many recent studies for use in simultaneous energy harvesting and vibration control. Metamaterials with quasiperiodic patterns possess many useful topological properties that make them a good ...

Localized Conical Edge Modes of Higher Orders in Photonic Liquid Crystals

open access: yesCrystals, 2019
Most studies of the localized edge (EM) and defect (DM) modes in cholesteric liquid crystals (CLC) are related to the localized modes in a collinear geometry, i.e., for the case of light propagation along the spiral axis.

Spatial structure of unstable normal modes in a glass-forming liquid

open access: yesSciPost Physics, 2021
The phenomenology of glass-forming liquids is often described in terms of their underlying, high-dimensional potential energy surface. In particular, the statistics of stationary points sampled as a function of temperature provides useful insight into

Vibrational Tamm states at the edges of graphene nanoribbons

open access: yes, 2010
We study vibrational states localized at the edges of graphene nanoribbons. Such surface oscillations can be considered as a phonon analog of Tamm states well known in the electronic theory.

Dynamics of Quasiperiodic Beams

open access: yesCrystals, 2020
Quasiperiodic metastrucures are characterized by edge localized modes of topological nature, which can be of significant technological interest. We here investigate such topological modes for stiffened and sandwich beams, which can be employed as ...

Edge Localized Modes as New Bifurcation in Tokamaks

open access: yesPhysical Review Letters, 1996
A model of giant edge localized modes in tokamaks is developed. The theory of self-sustained turbulence of a current-diffusive ballooning mode is extended. A bifurcation from the H mode to a third state with magnetic braiding, the M mode, is found to occur if the pressure gradient reaches a critical value.

Helical mode localization and mode locking of ideal MHD instabilities in magnetically perturbed tokamak plasmas

open access: yesNuclear Fusion, 2023
In H-mode tokamak plasmas, the achievable pressure-gradient is limited by type-I Edge Localized Modes (ELMs), which are projected to cause severe damage to future fusion devices.

Localized modes in defective multilayer structures

open access: yes, 2009
In this paper, the localized surface modes in a defective multilayer structure has been investigated. It is shown that the defective multilayer structures can support two different kind of localized modes depending on the position and the thickness of ...

Surface breathers in discrete magnetic metamaterials [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
We analyze the properties of discrete breathers excited near the edge of a one-dimensional metamaterial created by a truncated array of nonlinear split-ring resonators.
