Casting Activity of Scherotheca gigas in No‐Till Mediterranean Soils: Role in Organic Matter Incorporation and Influence of Aridity

open access: yesApplied and Environmental Soil Science, Volume 2010, Issue 1, 2010., 2010
The behaviour of earthworms, their role in organic matter incorporation into the soil, and the influence of aridity in such processes in arid and semiarid regions have scarcely been studied. In this study, physico‐chemical analyses of the casts and the surrounding no‐till agricultural soils of three experimental sites representing an aridity gradient ...

Do Ambitious Goals Call for Stringent Policy? The Stringency, Target Sectors, and Measures of Finland's Climate and Energy Policy in Response to EU Greenhouse Gas Emission Targets

open access: yesReview of Policy Research, Volume 43, Issue 1, January 2026.
ABSTRACT This article examines how the climate and energy policy in Finland changed between the two parliamentary terms of 2015–2019 and 2019–2023, when the EU tightened its greenhouse gas emission targets. We analyze the relevant policy measures (N = 223) of five government strategic plans and evaluate their stringency, i.e., their compulsory and ...

The influence of hydrological seasonality and land use and cover on the relationship between dissolved organic carbon and carbon dioxide along a karst‐draining large tropical river

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography, Volume 70, Issue 10, Page 2858-2871, October 2025.
Abstract The partial pressure of carbon dioxide (pCO2) in rivers is influenced by carbonate weathering, soil CO2, photosynthesis, and the mineralization of dissolved organic carbon (DOC). In tropical regions, elevated temperatures intensify these processes. However, their seasonal dynamics remain poorly understood in large karst‐draining rivers.

Influence of sex‐organ positions on pollen transfer and self‐interference in plants with stylar polymorphisms: An experimental approach using three‐dimensional printed flowers

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, Volume 39, Issue 9, Page 2526-2538, September 2025.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Heterostylous plants are defined by the reciprocal positioning of stigmas and anthers in floral morphs—a trait proposed by Darwin to enhance the efficiency of disassortative (intermorph) pollen transfer.

Water‐saving strategies in rice farming entail cascading effects in prey–predator interactions across ecosystem boundaries

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 62, Issue 9, Page 2273-2282, September 2025.
These results show that introducing multiple drainage periods in rice fields (i.e. AWD) indirectly hampers terrestrial spider reproduction through limiting the emergence of potential preys from the aquatic to terrestrial boundaries. MSD resulted in a more conciliatory strategy as it largely reduces methane emissions and does not affect predator–prey ...

Functional traits and soil water availability shape competitive interactions in a diploid–polyploid complex

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, Volume 113, Issue 9, Page 2332-2345, September 2025.
Our study emphasises that the long‐term fate of polyploids largely depends on water availability, with high polyploids having a competitive advantage in arid environments. This ultimately highlights the role of functional traits in shaping the competitive dynamics between cytotypes.
