Los accidentes ofídicos en Uruguay tienen una prevalencia anual variable que oscila entre los 80 a 100 casos. La mayoría de los accidentes ofídicos comunicados son por especies del género Bothrops, (60 a 70 casos anuales), el resto son por ofidios no ponzoñosos. Estos son los que requieren tratamiento específico con suero antibothrópico.
