The Effect of the Degree of Astigmatism on Optical Quality in Children

open access: yesJournal of Ophthalmology, 2017
Purpose. To investigate the effect of the degree of astigmatism on optical quality in children. The important objective evaluation parameters we focus on include the RMS of the high-order aberrations, MTF, and PSF. Methods. The children, age ranging from

The Forward Effect of Testing on Comprehending Complex Texts [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Research on the forward effect of testing has indicated that taking a test over prior material can improve one’s ability to memorize new material. However, no research has yet indicated whether such testing can improve one’s ability to understand or ...

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Effect of Fluorine Implantation Dose on Boron Transient Enhanced Diffusion and Boron Thermal Diffusion in Si1-xGex

open access: yes, 2005
This paper studies how boron transient enhanced diffusion (TED) and boron thermal diffusion in Si1-xGex are influenced by a high-energy fluorine implant at a dose in the range 5 × 1014 cm-2 to 1 × 1016 cm-2.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Valosin‐containing protein counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its ATPase activity in vitro

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Biomolecular condensates formed by fused in sarcoma (FUS) are dissolved by high ATP concentrations yet persist in cells. Using a reconstituted system, we demonstrate that valosin‐containing protein (VCP), an AAA+ ATPase, counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its D2 ATPase activity.

Cytotoxicity evaluation, antibacterial effect, and degree of conversion of QAM-containing adhesives

open access: yesBrazilian Oral Research
The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of adding quaternary ammonium methacrylates (QAMs) to experimental adhesives by assessing the degree of conversion (DC), cytotoxicity against keratinocytes and fibroblasts, and antibacterial activity ...

Diversity and complexity in neural organoids

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Neural organoid research aims to expand genetic diversity on one side and increase tissue complexity on the other. Chimeroids integrate multiple donor genomes within single organoids. Self‐organising multi‐identity organoids, exogenous cell seeding, or enforced assembly of region‐specific organoids contribute to tissue complexity.

Degree course change and student performance: a mixed-effect approach

open access: yes, 2016
This paper focuses on students credits earning speed over time and its determinants, dealing with the huge percentage of students who do not take the degree within the legal duration in the Italian University System.
