Protein pyrophosphorylation by inositol pyrophosphates — detection, function, and regulation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Protein pyrophosphorylation is an unusual signaling mechanism that was discovered two decades ago. It can be driven by inositol pyrophosphate messengers and influences various cellular processes. Herein, we summarize the research progress and challenges of this field, covering pathways found to be regulated by this posttranslational modification as ...

Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

Calculation of effective mode field area of photonic crystal fiber with digital image processing algorithm [PDF]

open access: yesКомпьютерная оптика, 2018
Photonic crystal fiber as a new type of optical fiber has been extensively applied because of its unique properties. The effective mode area of optical fiber is an important parameter, which has a great influence on the performance of optical fiber.

Lung Area from Surface Tension Effects

open access: yesExperimental Biology and Medicine, 1957
SummaryThe surface tension of pulmonary edema fluid was 5–10 dynes/cm as measured in aged, compressed bubbles; it was 40–50 dynes/cm as measured by capillary tube. Nasal mucus on aging and compression exhibits a fall of surface tension from 45–50 dynes/cm to 17 dynes cm with a minimum compressibility coefficient of 0.016 cm per dyne.

Effective Area-Elasticity and Tension of Micro-manipulated Membranes

open access: yes, 2001
We evaluate the effective Hamiltonian governing, at the optically resolved scale, the elastic properties of micro-manipulated membranes. We identify floppy, entropic-tense and stretched-tense regimes, representing different behaviors of the effective ...

Cell wall target fragment discovery using a low‐cost, minimal fragment library

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
LoCoFrag100 is a fragment library made up of 100 different compounds. Similarity between the fragments is minimized and 10 different fragments are mixed into a single cocktail, which is soaked to protein crystals. These crystals are analysed by X‐ray crystallography, revealing the binding modes of the bound fragment ligands.

Area of effective catch of crab traps in the northwestern part of the Tartar Strait

open access: yesИзвестия ТИНРО, 2014
Japanese cone-shaped traps for crabs are calibrated with the data of trawl survey in the northwestern Tartar Strait. The 100 % effective catch area for each trap in the order does not exceed 665 m2 for spiny crab, 1513 m2 for king crab, 3811 m2 for ...
