Effect of posture on vital capacity

Journal of Applied Physiology, 1986
The influence of some extreme body postures on vital capacity (VC) was examined in young adult humans. Two postures required full support of body weight by the arms: arms up, hanging from a bar, and arms down with hands gripping parallel bars. Three involved muscles that flex and extend the trunk: a partial sit-up position while supine and nearly ...

The Spillover Effects of Capacity Pooling in Hospitals

SSRN Electronic Journal, 2021
Off-service placement is a common capacity-pooling strategy that hospitals utilize to address mismatches in supply and demand that arise from the day-to-day variation in patient demand. This strategy involves placing patients in a bed in a unit that is designated for another specialty service.

Effect of vasopressin on systemic capacity

American Journal of Physiology-Heart and Circulatory Physiology, 1991
To assess the effect of vasopressin (VP) on systemic capacity (SC), blood was drained from the venae cavae to an oxygenator and returned to the aorta at a constant rate so that changes in SC could be measured as the inverse of changes in oxygenator volume in 17 anesthetized pigs. After 10 min of VP administration (1.1 U/min ia), mean arterial pressure

Effect of Drugs on Defibrillation Capacity

Drugs, 2008
Over 300,000 people die of sudden cardiac death (SCD) in the US annually. Implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs) have been shown to be more effective than antiarrhythmic drugs for the prevention of SCD in specific susceptible populations. Many patients in whom ICDs have been implanted receive concomitant therapy with antiarrhythmic drugs, for ...

Anaerobic Capacity: Effect of Computational Method

International Journal of Sports Medicine, 2011
Anaerobic capacity (AnC) can be estimated by subtracting VO (2) consumed from VO (2) demand, which can be estimated from multiple submaximal exercise bouts or by gross efficiency (GE), requiring one submaximal bout. This study compares AnC using the MAOD and GE method.

Impedance-effects in capacity estimation

ZOR Zeitschrift für Operations Research Methods and Models of Operations Research, 1992
Summary: Formulas for the capacity of an unsignalized intersection for traffic streams which are subordinated to two or more streams of higher priority are developed. The case of only two conflicting streams analysed by \textit{J. C. Tanner} [Biometrika 54, 657-658 (1967)] is extended.

AMC and HARQ: Effective capacity analysis

2016 IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference, 2016
Modern wireless systems deal with the adverse and unpredictable channel conditions using two main transmission schemes considered as complimentary: adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) and hybrid ARQ (HARQ). In this work we use the effective capacity as the performance measure to evaluate different design options.

Effects of Age on Work Capacity

American Industrial Hygiene Association Journal, 1970
The data evidence a decrease in maximum aerobic capacity in older individuals, regardless of sex, and indicate that an acceptable level of submaximal work should be based on the maximum aerobic capacity. Healthy older individuals can have a daily energy expenditure at a rate of 30 to 50% of maximum aerobic capacity without experiencing undue fatigue.

Effects of smoking on respiratory capacity and control

Clinical Linguistics & Phonetics, 2007
The purpose of this study was to provide information concerning the possible early effects of smoking on measures of respiratory capacity and control in young adult female smokers vs. nonsmokers. In particular, maximum performance test results (vital capacity and maximum phonation time) and measures of air pressures and airflows during voiceless, stop ...
