Interpreting the Effect of Distance on Migration

Journal of Political Economy, 1973
In this paper I discuss the economic (and other) determinants of the adverse effect of distance on migration, which is demonstrated by the negative distance elasticity of migration flows. These determinants are sorted and classified into two groups: (1) increasing (with distance) psychic cost and (2) diminishing (with distance) information.

Effective Mentoring at a Distance

2005
Abstract Given the exigencies of learning at a distance, to what extent can faculty and students develop mentoring relationships that support students’ academic progress? In a collaborative study, students, alumnae, and faculty at the School of Educational Leadership and Change at Fielding Graduate University interviewed their ...

On the exponential distance effect

Transportation Research, 1976
An alternative derivation of the formula for the exponential distance effect is described, giving a reasonable approximation to the distribution of residence to work trips. The attraction of a particular residence is assumed to be a random variable with a normal distribution.

Future events are far away: Exploring the distance-on-distance effect.

Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, 2014
Four dimensions of psychological distance (temporal, social, spatial, and probabilistic) have been widely studied. This research examines the distance-on-distance effect where an event that is close or distal along one dimension of psychological distance will be judged to be close or distal along other dimensions. For example, individuals will perceive

The Distance Effect in Focus of Attention: Spatial or Temporal Distance?

Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport
Purpose: The benefit of an external focus over an internal focus has been well-established. Within this literature, several studies have documented a distal effect of attentional focus by comparing the efficacy of a proximal and distal external focus.

EFFECTS OF TRANCEIVERS ON ELECTROMAGNETIC DISTANCE MEASUREMENTS

Survey Review, 1977
AbstractIn the Survey Review Vol. XXIII, No. 180, April 1976 page 281, the Conference of Commonwealth Survey Officers reported the following: “A warning was given of errors in distance measurement caused by operating a walkie-talkie radio close to the instrument and support was given for the need to check modulation frequencies”.

Crowding Effects of Density and Interpersonal Distance

The Journal of Social Psychology, 1992
In this study, Turkish teenagers were the subjects in an investigation of the effects of spatial and social variables on perceived crowding. In Study 1, male and female subjects were presented with diagrams that simulated social situations in which (a) distance between the subject and other persons, (b) number, or density, of subjects, (c) sex, and (d)

Effective use of WebBoard for distance learning

Proceedings IEEE International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies, 2002
The paper discusses the effective use of WebBoard as an asynchronous communication tool to facilitate class interaction in distance learning. Students' perceptions of the educational functions of WebBoard were polled and analyzed. Instructors were interviewed on their views of WebBoard management.
