Publisher Summary When waste-water including urban runoff is discharged into a watercourse, it exerts a polluting load on that water body. Micro-organisms present in the natural water and the wastewater break down (stabilize) the organic matter. As the early forms of wastewater treatment developed are aerobic, so the simplest way of estimating the ...

Organic matter (OM) of residual water is usually quantified by normalised global indices (DCO, COT and DBO). In order to deepen our knowledge, we have set up a better description of the residual OM thrown out of purification stations. Thus, hydroxicarbons, proteins, lipids, amino acids and uric acid methods of dosing were ratified.

Stream Pollution and Effluent Standards
2006Publisher Summary This chapter focuses on the process of organic stream pollution and the standard principles related to effluent discharge. In case of discharge of an organic effluent into a river, two processes take place, which include oxidation of the organic waste and reaeration; and the introduction of oxygen into the water.

A French Water Agency (Artois-Picardie) asked Ineris and Cemagref to provide an index of effluent toxicity from results of 8 bioassays performed on 30 industrial effluents. The Effect Concentration EC10 was chosen as a general parameter of toxicity to compare effluents.
